Monologue (BBC, 1973)

"I feel for you. Even if you feel nothing... for me. I feel for you, old chap. I keep busy in the mind. That's why I'm still sparking, get it? I've got a hundred percent more energy in me now than when I was twenty-two: when I was twenty-two I slept twenty-four hours a day, and twenty-two hours a day at twenty-four, work it out for yourself. But now I'm sparking. At my peak, up here! Two-thousand revolutions a second, every living hour of the day and night. I'm a front-runner!"

#harold pinter #monologue #BBC #classic tv #1973 #Henry woolf #christopher morahan #Single play #At just twenty minutes long this is probably the shortest original piece Pinter wrote for television #It is also one of the barest and most stripped down examples of his work: a man alone in a sitting room delivers a one sided #Conversation to an empty chair. It's immediately gripping however. Opening just outside the room the camera glides in #Takes in the empty chair and settles on Woolf who then proceeds to address his monologue to some invisible person #Imagined or perhaps remembered. The chair itself becomes almost a character (or if not the chair then the absence of a second person)#As the camera occasionally returns to it for beats or moments to allow the words to settle. Morahan also sometimes fades between an image #Of woolf and then a mirrored image of himself briefly overlayed as if to suggest the figure he imagines he is speaking to is some other #Form of himself. A past self or imagined self: an ideal or dream self. Or perhaps the memories that he talks of did happen #With some friend long lost or dead. As with all of the playwrights work there are no easy answers.#Woolf is brilliant as the unnamed man. He and Pinter were friends of old and had known one another since the 40s #This monologue was something he would return to as well. He performed it onstage decades later to critical acclaim #There are similarities with the basement in the idea of a male friendship being upended by a female love interest #And interesting comparisons to be made with the later Landscape (which features two characters delivering #Monologues like the man here; apparently holding one sided conversations only in the same room together in the later play)#This benefits too from Wolf's being like Pinter a Jewish Londoner: his voice is in many ways similar to the writer's so that it is no #Great leap to hear the words in Pinter's own voice. Indeed at times he put me in mind of Pinter's version of McCann from The Birthday Party #Edt: I of course meant Pinter's performance as Goldberg in TBP not McCann. Smh.
