The Chromatic Typewriter is a modified a 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, with the letters and keys replaced with different colors and associated pads. 

This is a conceptual art piece (i.e., - not fully functional machine). To create a ‘painting’ would require each letter-pad to have the color re-applied manually each time it was used. Tyree says, “ Although it does not paint, I've decided I can at least re-type my artist statement with the thing, so long as I can limit it to a paragraph . . . “

Note: the paintings shown in the typewriter are prints on paper of Tyree’s paintings using traditional brushes and painting techniques as shown on his website.

The Chromatic Typewriter is a conceptual art piece by Tyree Callahan. The Bellingham, Washington-based artist modified a 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, replacing the letters and keys with different colours and associated pads. The typewriter was entered into the 2012 West Prize competition and since then it has exploded in popularity online. Prints are now available (more info here) and the response has been overwhelmingly positive for the painter.

It’s important to remember this is a conceptual art piece and not entirely functional. To type out an actual painting would be fairly cumbersome as the paint would have to be manually reapplied each time it was used. Not to say it’s impossible, but the design would need some further modification to produce the type of artworks suggested in the images below.

Tyree Callahan sometimes paints with keys rather than brushes, using a unique "chromatic typewriter." The vintage machine got a vibrant makeover when the keys were replaced with colors and the type-bars with blocks of paint.
