Happy disability pride month
I have an ice pick in my skull
And a power drill in my brain
Every time I move my head
All I feel is pain
From the moment the sun rises
Till the moon sinks below
Every waking second
Feels like taking a blow
My vision swims round and round
And my body spins like a wheel
Everything feels unstable
It takes everything not to keel
Pounding and constricting
Like a tangle of vines
All I ask is for a tiny respite
Just a minute of painless time
Nothing like a flare-up before bed to make you feel alive
shout out to my cane users that use them for balance! be it vertigo or some other disorder, or just being a fall risk!! ur like me i love you
honestly, as a disabled person, potatoes are a lifesaver.
I can't eat most foods b/c they trigger flare ups & so shopping and cooking are a dizzying, time consuming nightmare.
But what's fast to make, low effort, high calorie & delicious???
The potato. 🥔🥔🥔
If I woke up without vertigo I would go on rollercoasters and go to lookout towers. I would take in views unaccessible to me for my whole life and spin around and finally... Finally I would look up at the stars without pain for the first time in my life. For the first time in my life maybe I could grab something from the top shelf maybe I could look into my partners eyes without getting dizzy. Maybe.
But this will not happen, and I must grieve the experiences my disability prevents me from having in order to live my life without resentment.
All I can do is accept my life as it is and manage the best I can. I still choose to believe that one day I will be able to look up at the stars, one day my head will stop spinning, even if that day is nowhere in sight.
Dizzy Free
Today, for the first time in two years, I had zero vertigo! Of course, that’s cus I went swimming. I also paid for it later by getting a quadruple hit the second I left the pool.
A lot of people who suffer from chronic vertigo have that one activity that lets them go totally vertigo free for a bit. For Sir Patrick Stewart, it’s driving. For me, it’s swimming. While I’m floating in the water, the vertigo goes away. So does my oversensitivity. However, as soon as I get out I get hit with a ton of vertigo. But it’s worth it for those glorious few minutes when the world is totally still.
chronic vertigo problems
1. Being stationary & still feeling like you’ll fall over.
2. Nodding too quickly makes you dizzy.
3. Shuffling around like a grandma
4. Can’t stand or sit for too long
5. L A U N D R Y. Can only do it on good days.
6. There are different kinds of dizziness.
7. Bending over & reaching up is dangerous.
8. When someone behind you expects you to keep turning around to talk to them.
9. Trying to keep up with a fast walker.
10. Forget about ever driving.... or walking anywhere that isn’t 100% necessary.
