“I'm Always On A Mountain When I Fall“

From the 1978 album of the same name. This song, written by Chuck Howard, was a Number Two hit and the album hit 17. Howard was a fairly well-regarded songwriter, producer and A&R man in ‘20s Nashville and the son of rockabilly wildman Chuck Howard (Senior) who cut a classic rocker nugget “Crazy Crazy Baby” (which was covered by everyone from a young Doug Sahm to a middle-aged Ringo Starr).

If you held a gun to my head I would have to admit there are a few country singers I like better than Merle Haggard, maybe two or three. Nobody’s able to read my mail like he was, though.
