here's an exerpt from one of my latest chapters of I Will Find You. If you like how I write my AFTG fanfic please consider reading this one. I love Ciaran and Evan very much. This is from a chapter where they're middle school aged and still in foster care.
Ciaran was leaning into his side. Evan let him. It felt good in a way he wasn’t expecting. Getting passed from home to home and school to school had meant Evan hadn’t had anyone in a really long time. There had barely been room for a solid, unchanging parental figure, let alone a friendship. And Evan was always hiding things anyway. He didn’t want the other kids to see how damaged he had become. The vile things he’d been through had to have left him as marked. Someone not to be wanted, or loved. They could never understand. And if they perceived too much, they would reject him. And he could not take that.
Yet Ciaran was here. Beside him. Ciaran was a warm and solid presence against his side. The thought of letting himself have this boy was terrifying. If he made a friend, he’d just end up losing them. That was the nature of who and what they were. Worse, if he got used to their friendship, even began to love it and rely on it, Ciaran being snatched away would be devastating.
And he wanted it. He wanted it so badly that at this moment he couldn’t breathe. Someone that saw him, and cared, and even liked him just as he was.
“I can’t be your friend,” he managed to say, working his mouth against the dryness that had invaded. Ciaran pulled back and then slid to his feet. He stood in front of Evan, just out of reach, and typed. Then he handed over the phone. Did I do something wrong?
Evan shook his head immediately. “No. Okay? You didn’t. You’ve done everything… right. And that’s a problem.”
And damn, Ciaran looked so confused then. Evan hated being the cause of that face. “No, see, we’re foster kids. We can’t have friends. Not properly. One of us will be moved on before the other. And we won’t see each other again. It’ll hurt too much if we become friends. I can’t… I won’t do it.” Realisation crossed Ciaran’s face. Then the idiot had the audacity to smile.
“What? Why do you look like that?”
Ciaran waved his hands at Evan and then typed quickly, making a spelling error along the way in his haste. That’s itt? I can fix that.
Evan stared at it. When he looked at Ciaran he knew his face must be one of bewilderment by Ciaran’s soft laugh.
“What? You secretly on some kind of social worker payroll?” Ciaran laughed again, louder. Then he snatched back the phone. When he handed it back to Evan, his heart skipped a beat.
No! But wherever you go I will find you. And I’ll come if you call. You won’t lose me. I promise you that.
Evan read it three times before handing it back. “How? What do you even mean?” And, the words he would not and could not say: why would you do all that for me?
I’ll buy you a phone. I’ll pay for it. If you call me, I’ll run off to get to you. And if I can I’ll see if I can get placed close by. I can be a real diva. If this is the only thing stopping us from being friends then I promise, I swear, you won’t lose me. I don’t want to lose you either.
Evan felt on the verge of being overwhelmed. No one, in his whole life so far, had ever said something so meaningful. He had had empty promises before. Or well meaning words. But what Ciaran was offering was something so different from that. Ciaran was one hundred percent sincere. He would use anything he had, at just the tender age of twelve and looked down upon by everyone around him, to get to Evan and be by his side. To Ciaran, Evan was already worth that effort and that promise. And Evan believed him. Ciaran faced the world with total stubborn conviction. If Evan called him and said to come, Ciaran would find a way to get to him.
He handed back the phone. “You promise?” His voice hadn’t sounded so soft and so small to him in a very long time.
Ciaran put the phone on the spot beside Evan. Then he took both of Evan’s hands. “Evan,” he said, “I… promise…”
Ciaran’s voice was honeyed, warm, with that Irish accent layered on top. That he tried to talk just to put Evan at ease meant everything.
