Okay, it’s time to give a proper update on the Cielcin doll now that the Shadows Upon Time release gala has come and gone. There are still some finishing touches I need to make, but I’ve had to remind myself that perfect is the enemy of done, and I needed to have something to bring to the gala. With that said, here’s some pictures of the doll from my trip to the gala.
When I get some more time, I’ll also be posting some of my progress pictures of the doll and explanations of how I went about making it.
Been a good while since I posted an art project here. I’ve been working on this doll based on the Cielcin from The Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio. It’s going to be a little chibi version of Syriani Dorayaica from the cover of Kingdoms of Death. That’s actually the book cover that got me into the series and the book I finished rereading a few days ago!
As for next steps on this doll, I’m currently working on the new and repatterned head. The doll itself has been beheaded and im getting ready to sew on the hair to the new head. Next will be the eyes, which I’ve got some nice 40mm black safety eyes, and then embroidering the nose and mouth. After that, I’ve gotta finally decide if I want to shove some wire into the doll to make it poseable.
@cielcin due to surprise family visits, I haven’t finished completely but I thought I’d showcase the WIP at the very least. FATE IS GREAT but I guess I drew Laurencin maybe a little too much like Robin (or maybe they look too much alike?).
"Ah...I do not know of the stars, because the distant light does not reach me... "
But the darkness within that man's soul reached her.
Etoile did not come from a mage family nor had any knowledge of magic, yet somehow she was able to reach out from the darkness towards a light that she had longed for. There was fear in her heart as she called out. If her heart couldn't reach and learn to love the light, how could she find the heart to love her own name?
And as she reached, something channeled within her. Whether it was because of a wish or because of something more, she grabbed something from that darkness. But instead of the warm light, she found something else. Or actually, she found someone.
In the dark, a voice calls out:
"I ask of you. Are you my master?"
. . .
Huh? This child?
Well, he hadn't expected his master to be so small, that is for sure. A child whose soul is pure and bright. A reminder of who he used to be, but someone that he had forgotten.
The blood that began to spill everywhere looked like maroon wine.
He who smells of blood.
His sword that has killed.
Laurencin, Saber-class.
And yet a child who reaches for the light found him at the end. Why did he become a heroic spirit? A murderer, a thief, a man covered in darkness. He, himself, isn't quite sure the answer. But her voice calls out to him.
"You smell like blood . . . but also flowers."
I was no longer scared...because we were connected by an invisible bond, a leash made of stardust...
Etoile had reached out to him. Laurencin had been chained by a leash of light. He could only follow this child and see what they could reach out together. Could they find a story over there?
I know some of you guys are Sun Eater fans. And others are fans of good books. Christopher Ruocchio, released Empire of Silence back in 2018 through DAW Books. They printed 5000 hardcovers, and that was it. No reprints. Today, those hardcovers go for upwards of $200 on ebay. You can still get the book in mass market paperback, ebook, and audio. But hardcovers are out of reach for most.
But Ruocchio has set up a Kickstarter for premium hardcovers which will be mailed out later this year. They are limited to 500 numbered editions and 26 lettered editions. The sale goes live at midnight early Friday morning eastern time. The link is here. There are almost 900 people who have signed up for notifications when it goes live, so they may sell out fast.
