15 with Jakob and Dwyer, please
Jakob had taken his eyes off of Dwyer for three whole seconds, and the boy had managed to slip away from him. Unbelievable.
“Where is that lazy son of mine?” Jakob muttered under his breath as he weaved through the tents of their camp, moving out of the way when processions of wounded soldiers rushed by towards the medical tent. He’d checked there first, but Dwyer hadn’t been there. If he was napping again with Mitama, Jakob swore he’d give him the lecture of a lifetime.
In the aftermath of the terrible battle that they only barely triumphed over, every hand needed to be available for help.
Jakob went around the whole camp twice, stopping to make sure Lord Kamui was alright and being tended to before moving on. Still, no matter who he asked, nobody had seen Dwyer. He was beginning to believe he really had gone and fallen asleep somewhere.
Finally, as dusk fell, he got wind of Dwyer’s location via a couple of soldiers who were limping by, fresh bandages on their minor wounds.
“- which is a good thing, otherwise we would never have been tended to-”
Catching onto the flow of conversation, Jakob hurried towards where they came from, and finally, finally walked into a tent to find Dwyer.
He’d only been gone for an hour, but he looked a hundred more times more ragged than when Jakob last saw him. The staff in his hands trembled as he cast his healing magic over a soldier who presented him a deep-looking slice in his arm.
Jakob only watched as the faint glow of magic faded, and Dwyer swayed.
“There,” he huffed. “Just put a bandage on it to make sure it doesn’t get infected, and you’ll be fine.”
“Thank you,” the soldier smiled at him, moving away. The next one moved forward, and lifted his shirt to present a large piece of debris stuck in his side. Dwyer lifted his staff, and repeated the procedure.
Jakob watched this unfold, and only noticed the several discarded healing staves at his feet a moment too late. Dwyer had clearly been at this for a long time. An hour. He hated to admit it, but he was kind of worried.
“Dwyer,” he called, moving forward. His son’s eyes snapped open, and a look of irritation came across his exhausted face.
“Hello, father. Come to interrupt my work and call me a disappointment again, I suppose,” Dwyer greeted him, motioning for the soldier to move on as his injury was healed. “It’s rude to cut in line, though, so if you could just wait like everyone else…”
“Dwyer, fix your attitude. You won’t talk to your father like that,” Jakob grumbled, protesting when Dwyer motioned another soldier over. “What do you think you’re doing, exactly?”
“What’s it look like?” Dwyer hummed, healing the soldier. “These people have minor injuries. The Ladies Elise and Sakura won’t be looking at them for another while, but I don’t think any person is less important than others, so…”
“Dwyer…” his son’s consideration shocked Jakob, and a strange fondness overcame him. “I understand, but… you’ve been at this for a while. You need your rest.”
“No one will tend to these people if I rest, father,” Dwyer rolled his eyes, stumbling lightly when he finished. Jakob immediately stabilized him, now getting more and more worried. “Just… leave me be. I’ll take my punishment once I’m done here, or whatever.”
“Dwyer…” Jakob sighed. “I won’t punish you. You’re… you’re doing good. But I just want you to take a break. Healing is an exhausting procedure.”
“You’re not.” His gaunt face, sharp cheekbones, limp hair and baggy eyes said otherwise. Dwyer appeared just short of burned out. “Please, Dwyer. As ridiculous as this sounds, I do worry for you. You need to take care of yourself, too.”
“Father…” Dwyer looked undecided, so Jakob decided to convinced him by putting a hand over the one he had clenched on his staff. He gently lowered the staff.
“You need to eat something. You look absolutely horrid,” he criticized, though not unkindly.
“Of course, you’re criticizing me again,” Dwyer sighed, but let go of the staff. It clattered to the ground. “Fine. But I’m coming back as soon as I’m done. And Aunt Felicia better not have been the one cooking.”
He headed off, leaving Jakob behind. And he froze in place, wishing he could articulate, just once, how proud he actually was of his son, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t say it. So he just followed, setting a hand on Dwyer’s shoulder to guide him, and hoped that his actions would say what his words couldn’t.
