Thank you Kyo Sohma for allowing me to write endlessly about you because the daydreams don’t stop ✌️ hopefully i have some fellow fruits basket lovers out there to enjoy this thing I made during a writer’s block slump — if anyone remembers the Cinderella-ish episode, it’s based loosely on that and it’s pretty damn fluffy. Have fun reading!
Pairing: Kyo Sohma x Reader
Warnings: None
Eager anticipation buzzed through the air and all around backstage, with girls reciting lines over and over, shuffling around the closeness of dressing room quarters, and tugging on outfits far too extravagant to be made for a high school-run play. It would nearly be suffocating if not for the fresh air that breezed through the open door of the otherwise heated space, a number of students flocking towards the entryway in hopes of keeping their makeup from sweating off. Despite the warmth becoming quite overbearing, it was impossible to feel irritated with the pure amount of excitement flooding through your body.
“Hanajima!” you called airily, “Would you mind helping me with my hair? I can’t get the curls in the back right.”
Your long time friend and resident psychic turned to you with a gentle smile as she took in your appearance, simply nodding her head before easily weaving through the crowd of girls still hovering in the room. “Sure thing, although you’ve done a great job for the most part.”
“You think so?”
“Most definitely,” she affirmed, gently twisting strands of hair against the heated iron you handed her. “You look beautiful — just like a princess.”
You would have hoped so, seeing that you were cast as royalty for your class’ play. Thanks to the generous help of Yuki’s brother Ayame, the costumes for your measly school festival were made with exceptional detail. Even a background character like yourself had a gown created in fine taste, despite holding such a small role as a ball attendee. Ayame was even kind enough to gift you a tiara — completing the look, he claimed.
Now that act one had gone off without a hitch, the fun part could begin — featuring amazingly dressed characters and music written long before your existence. The ball scene was your favorite.
A small laugh bubbled past your lips as you examined Hanajima’s own dress for act two: plain, dark as night, and utterly fitting for someone of her character. Simply perfect, considering the play was now deemed ‘Cinderella-ish’. “I think you’re supposed to be the lead princess here, Hana.”
“It doesn’t mean you’re any less stunning as a royal than myself,” she insisted, pulling a freshly curled lock of hair down to make it appear natural.
The speakers backstage chimed with a cheery tone just as Hanajima finished spraying the last of your curls, making everyone in the dressing room aware of their five minute window before curtain call. An ecstatic Tohru was tailed closely by a less pumped Uotani, the duo waiting to depart for the stage wings alongside you both. The former quickly grew enamored with Hana’s dress, whereas the blonde beside her half heartedly attempted to usher the entire group our of the dressing room.
Everyone made it to their places in time, prepared to start the second act without any problems — well, in spite of the fact that the show was already a botched version of a fairytale classic. Spin-off or not, nerves still bubbled fresh in the pit of your stomach at the thought of being onstage once again, changing costumes from an act one commoner into a full blown princess. It’s not like this time would be any different.
“Look at you, Kyon-Kyon! Very princely!”
Or, maybe it would be — just a bit.
Even from the other side of the stage, a flash of orange easily caught your attention as Kyo stepped into the opposite wing, and you cracked a smile whilst Hiroshi excessively fawned over the male lead himself. Kyo had barely showed up in the first act due to his character’s limited appearances, but Uotani could barely keep quiet in her complaints about his stiff behavior when she arrived back in the dressing room. Bland, standoffish, and ridiculous-looking were her most used descriptions. You didn’t even have the time to ask about his outfit with her lengthy rant (although her venting was quite entertaining).
You strained to get a glimpse of his prince costume from where you stood, but a number of people stood in front of him as they also waited for the curtain to rise. You blew out a breath of exasperation as you rocked back on your heels, unable to find a good vantage point to see him clearly.
Although half of your job as a background character was to find him and introduce yourself during the ball anyways, you were impatient in wanting to see what he looked like — as part of your role, of course. It would simply be easier to do your role if you knew what to look for right off the bat.
“You’ll be able to see him when the act begins, you know,” Hanajima informed you, a knowing grin ghosting across her lips as your gaze snapped to her presence beside you. “Your waves are all over the place just from the thought.”
“Hana!” came your whisper-yell, face heating up with the knowledge of getting caught redhanded. “It’s nothing like that!”
“Waves don’t lie, but I wouldn’t need them regardless. It’s written all over your face.”
And as the curtain rose, she left you for the main stage without a second glance — a smatter of applause and your slacked jaw in her wake.
You took a moment to compose yourself before following not long after, easily blending in with the handful of your classmates milling about onstage. Tohru sent a kind smile in your direction upon seeing you, having entered from the opposite wing and taking her place with the other stepsister of the show. You gave a subtle nod back in acknowledgment.
You’d rehearsed the motions a couple times before, albeit very half-heartedly. Lights, costumes, and an audience really shouldn’t prove much different in the end. Nerves were no big deal at all, you rationalized.
In spite of the mental pep talk, apprehension still shot through you as the sound of dialogue filtered through the speakers overhead, some familiar lead voices and the beginnings of a classical waltz song acting as your cue to move towards your next spot in the crowd: in front of the prince.
Kyo.
For some reason, the need to smooth out your dress and readjust the dainty tiara on your head became incredibly overwhelming. That urge only made itself clearer once you finally caught a glimpse of your intended target for the scene.
For someone who often appeared entrancing in darker colors, red was apparently a nice shade on him. A good thing, since he was almost drowning in the crimson that dominated his costume. A black collar and a white undershirt served as a tasteful contrast to top it all off, but it was hard to focus on the complete details. Well at least, it grew difficult to focus on anything with the way that he was watching you.
Kyo was on the verge of breaking character with the attention he was throwing to a nameless face in the background, but like hell he really cared. Besides, half of the audience was too focused on dialogue occurring elsewhere to follow his trail of vision.
Apricot eyes flitted from your expression to the dress you wore as you approached, his features softening as the beginnings of a smile tugged the corners of his mouth. He only straightened up when the heel of Uotani’s boot met the top of his foot with an unforgiving force, the sound of his irritation fortunately not picking up on a nearby mic. Yet for whatever reason, his stare never faltered from you for very long. Especially when you finally stood face to face, as you attempted to stifle a laugh at Uotani’s frustration with the Sohma in front of you.
Your voice was barely above a whisper, an easy smile overtaking your features as your head dipped into a makeshift bow. “Your highness.”
Even before peeking your head up to see his expression, it was clear to discern his bemusement by a faint huff of laughter.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“I’m not the one in a bright red suit, now am I?”
At that remark, Kyo’s brows rose a fraction. “Ya’ think it looks bad?”
“Oh no,” you smiled, presenting a hand forward as if you were formally introducing yourself (because, regardless of being a background character, you’d have to keep up that royalty act somehow). “You look really good. It’s just nice to poke fun at you.”
The Sohma boy merely blinked in bewilderment, obviously not expecting such a straightforward response. But then with unexpected charisma and a stupidly soft smile on his face, he lifted his hand to your awaiting one, following your previous motions with a steady bow of his own.
“For what it’s worth,” he murmured, tone low, “you really look like a princess.”
Your mouth went dry at his words, mind scrambling to come up with any sort of retort as he looked up at you with that enrapturing gaze of his. In an instant you became hyper aware of everything he did, from the way he scanned your face with such intent to decipher your reaction, to the manner in which his outstretched arm supported your hand with so much delicacy that even you felt fragile looking at it.
When a clearly eavesdropping Uotani subtly cleared her throat, the blonde obviously waiting for your reply, you quickly snapped back into the situation at hand. It was very likely approaching your time to move away and let the prince do his own scene, you realized, and so you reluctantly pulled your hand back to your side. “Keep telling me that and I just might fall in love with you, coppertop.”
At that, Kyo’s eyes grew wide, and without a second thought (or likely, without a thought at all) he blurted out a string of discomposed words before you could turn away.
“Seriously, you do — I mean, you’re like a princess!” he hurried out, face growing as crimson as his costume as he lowered his voice to a hush. “You look…uh, you look pretty.”
Oh.
Oh.
He thinks you look pretty.
A smile flitted over your face at the thought, deciding to pull his leg just a bit to test the waters.
“Only when I’m like this, though? All dressed up and playing a part?”
Your lips curled further at the corners while watching him practically trip over each syllable, your stomach erupting into butterflies at the flushed sincerity written all over his face. “Wha—? No no, all the time!”
“Relax, I’m teasing,” you reassured, his nervous but expectant mannerisms being all the indication necessary to know he was talking honestly. “Find me after bows, m’kay? We can talk.”
The Sohma second year shot you a baffled look, heat blazing over his cheeks like wildfire. “Uh-huh. Cool. Sounds good.”
“Wow, little Kyon is at a loss for words,” an entertained Uotani snickered under her breath, glancing away as Kyo glowered in her direction. “Lovely, but can we pay attention to the show now, Prince Charming?”
He simply blew an exasperated breath at her insistence to focus, subtly watching on as a mere royal princess extra wove through a crowd of her peers, settling herself gracefully on the opposite side of the stage. It took everything in him not to smile.
Tohru was literally in the princess dress for a grand total of 4 shots in Episode 23 and yet you know DAMN WELL I had to draw her in it. Can you imagine Kyo and Tohru had actually gotten to dance together… Don’t know if my heart could have taken it.

"I won't ask what you wish for, I only hope it comes true by your own two hands" is a really powerful line of dialogue for someone who is playing the fairy godmother in the weirdest Cinderella adaptation known to man.
Y’all I’m starting to think we’re not going to get Cinderella Ish.
Looking through the manga to find all the trailer scenes made me think it might not fit. In the manga the Cinderella content is sprinkled in amongst everything else going on. I’m assuming they might put all of this together and make a dedicated episode, so I’m thinking it might be next season.
I could be wrong, and I know it’s not super important, but I didn’t see any sign of it in the trailer and it made me wonder.
I'm watching fruits basket season 2 for the first time and Cinderella-ish is all i could have wanted and More😍😍😍 Kyo and Tohru are my OG ship and I love themmm
