Challengers 2024

My thoughts

Oh Challengers, my beloved. What can I even say. This movie changed my life to put it simply. Upon my first watch I immediately knew it deserved a place in my top 4. It has everything, suspense, Zendaya, beautiful cinematography accompanied by a beautiful score, great acting, Zendaya, 2 boys who like one girl (and each other) , blonde Mike Faist, Josh O'Connor as a sassy American, a love triangle, I can go on. What more could 2024 me ask for? I thought about this movie everyday BEFORE I ever watched it. Months went by where I would go to sleep thinking about when I would get to watch this movie. One of my biggest, and I mean biggest regrets, is missing the theatrical release of this film. I don't think I'll ever truly forgive myself. At that point in time I guess I didn't want it bad enough. At this point in time there's nothing I want more..

My first viewing experience was on a website on my iPad at my grandparents house. No one was home, and no one knew that when they would return, I would be a new person!! I feel that since this is my blog, I have the space to be open and honest, which is why I'll now go on to say that I spiraled into an obsession. I slept, breathed, and ate Challengers for a long time after, and honestly, I'd be lying if I said that much has changed. I will talk to anyone who will listen about this movie. Whether or not you have seen Challengers and how you feel about lets me know if you're pure of heart. I'm joking..kind of, but in all seriousness, if you ask anyone who knows me what I don't shut up about, they will say Challengers. I feel proud that someone will think of Challengers and think of me. It's an honor. Since then I've turned it on more times than I can count on one hand, and opened the tag on Tumblr more times than I can count without losing track and having to start over. Now sometimes I put it on just for the sake of it. Sometimes it feels like everyone has moved on, but a select special and superior few of us have held on. Every summer is Challengers summer.

I really loved how a story was depicted that you don't see in popular media often, two men both fighting for the attention of one woman not only due to attraction but because of the respect they have for her. Watching the state of awe that she continuously left them in was one of the best parts. There's so much passion in the film whether it be in love for tennis of romantic love. It is truly an experience. And obviously to address the movie's elephant in the room, or should I say the Art, Tashi, and Patrick in the hotel room. There's not really much I'm willing to say about it because as of right now this blog has a reputation to uphold, but it was and is one of the most thrilling experiences I have had while watching a movie. AND, the scene evokes almost the same feeling every time I watch it. One of the most memorable scenes for me other than THE scene, is when Art tells Tashi that he loves her, and Tashi responds that she knows. It was just so blunt and it reflected how little she sought after affirmation from the men in her life. It was almost satisfying to see, though it did make me feel kind of bad for Art. I found myself feeling kind of bad for him a lot throughout the film. He was just kind of pathetic (non-derogatory) in some ways, but like-he's blonde and Mike Faist so I can't help but kind of enjoy it. Regardless, I need more movies that follow a boss ass bitches like Tashi Duncan, even if (especially if) they do sometimes degrade the men in their lives. I also feel that one of the reasons I enjoy this movie so much is because it's one of the only movies that I would want to live in. It's so dreamy at times. Plus, the characters mean a lot to me, and the impact that they have had on my life is like palpable. You can look at the walls of my room and see that, or just have one conversation with me about anything remotely related to the movie.

One of my other favorite scenes from the movie takes place pretty early on the beach after Tashi's Adidas party. The music that plays while they chat is just soooo, I don't even know how to explain it. Almost kind of otherworldly. It like transports me onto the beach with them and I love it every time. This movie has been robbed of so many awards I won't even really get into but, in the realm of film scores, it is one of THE best, and should be recognized as so!! This film was just such a breath of fresh air and unlike anything I had ever seen before. It may be for the better or worse but now often times after I watch something I find myself comparing how much I liked it to how much I liked Challengers. The only thing that could have made this movie better is a longer run-time. Luca Guadagnino, I'm still waiting on that directors-cut..I know you have it.

Anyways, I'd like to hear your thoughts, preferably positive because I can't take any criticism about my favorite movie.

And what if I said this is the best movie to come out of 2024? PLEASE watch this if you have Prime Video. It’s such a good message. It will make you laugh and give you that cry you’ve been holding onto for a week. Also, it is one of Aubrey Plaza’s career best performances (not counting Agatha All Along). And having watched Maisy Stella since the beginning in Nashville…that girlis going places, for sure. Will be rewatching in the future. 👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏼🫂

Movie recommendations from your cinephile boyfriend (long post):

We’ll start easy with ones I’m sure most of my darlings have already seen. First up is most definitely ALW’s Phantom of the Opera. Seeing this musical live as a young lad changed me literally forever I think. And the movie is fantastic as well! Next is Egger’s Nosferatu. I feel like this one is self explanatory as to why it’s on this blog. After that would be Underworld (the first one) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. You can skip the middle two if you like, the story still flows with out them and these two will convert even a Twilihard into a true vampireXwerewolf gourmand. Of course Salt Burn, despite not having any paranormal aspects, has some of the most delicious mlm yearning in modern cinema. And to pair with that like a fine wine we have Braid. No one’s heard of Braid. Do you like Lesbians? Do you like art? Do you like weird fucked up shit? GO WATCH BRAID. NOW. I’ve only seen them once, but if you fuck with all the weird stuff on this blog, definitely watch The Boy and Black Christmas. And finally, brining up the rear, is the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Listen, I love the originals. Tobe Hooper is one of my favorite directors, and a lot of my personal friends worked on the special effects for the second one (which is actually my all time favorite movie). If you’re on *this* blog for *this* content, go watch the 2003 version. It’s a much tighter and more gripping story. It’s super gross in all the right ways, I promise 🖤🖤🖤

Watching 365+ films in one year

This year, I've set a challenge. Watch at least one movie a day all year long. You can join me on that journey by following my letterboxd account.

Tonight, I'm watching—or rather rewatching Only Lovers Left Alive tonight. Part of my goal is to watch more vampire films or films that make me think. This movie is both of those things wrapped in one pretty little aesthetic piece of cinema. From start to finish I wish I lived in this world, just purely for the aesthetics.

I will leave a full review on letterboxd, but expect me to talk about this movie, and others like it, going forward.

Yesterday, I watched Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person. It was the same. Both vampire and thoughtful moment. I have so much to say about both.
