Chip, the girl sport, or, the golden idol of Mt. Rosa : a tale of northern Arizona (1899) | Nickels and Dimes | Northern Illinois University Digital Library
As a “girl sport,” unencumbered by typical 19th century gender roles expected of women, Cinnamon Chip rides, drinks, stops train robbers, gambles, and dresses in trousers in the mining town where this story is set. She is incredibly busy, and at the end of the novel is only nominally returned to a more “suitable” feminine role. Author Edward L. Wheeler published dozens of popular stories featuring characters that did not adhere to traditional 19h century gender expectations.
