I don't see you on the list! V disappointing, clearly these dorks have not done their due diligence. What if someone comes across some of your steamy Wincest art and is irreparably traumatized??
i mean if you're not traumatizing impressionable young folk are you even writing wincest?
Whatcha workin' on, Z? A sequel to your West Wing J2 piece, perhaps?
haha, is that a sort-of-subtle request or just a really phenomenal guess? I am working on a sequel–that’s the writing project for today, actually, as I have to submit my SMPC fic tomorrow morning. (May actually post very late tonight; it’ll be late Sunday morning in Australia, surely that counts.)
I really like being part of the SMPC. It provides a steady, reasonable deadline, to guarantee a posted fic every twoish months, and the rules–has to be porny, obviously, but also has to be between 2k and 10k–provide a nice cushion. Forces me to work out some of the shorter ideas, and keep them short. It’s a nice break, in between whatever current long-ass piece I’m working on.
More to the point, the West Wing AU for today is actually sort of a prequel to the first one; set in Julyish of 2022, before the midterm elections, during a state dinner for the President of Uruguay. Politicking, diplomacy, getting a glimpse of a few other members of the administration, Jared and President Ackles in tuxedos. Jared and President Ackles getting out of their tuxedos. :) This is the first J2 AU I’ve done (not that I’ve done many) where I’m doing the whole ‘CW casting’ thing; generally I prefer to use a group of OCs, but it was really fun to map some of the ‘characters’ of the CW RPF fanon onto this story. So–here, why not, let’s look at the cast. That’s directors commentary, right? :)
President Jensen Ackles: elected in 2020, on a ticket with Vice President Sterling K. Brown. Served as U.S. Senator (D-Texas) from 2014-2020; previously Texas state senator from 2010-2014. MA in Public Policy from UT-Dallas; enlisted in the Air Force, 1996-2004.
Jared Padalecki, White House Chief of Staff: MA in Political Science from Columbia University. Professional political operative; joined the Ackles for Senate campaign in 2012.
Catherine Ackles, First Lady of the United States. (OC) Met and married Jensen in the MA program at UT-Dallas. From an old-money Texas family, very focused on philanthropy and social work. Has agreed to stay in a beard-position in her marriage after Jensen’s personal revelation, because she can be more effective as the wife of a politician.
Danneel Harris, Deputy Chief of Staff: JD from Brown. Constitutional law consultant for then-Senator Ackles; joined the Ackles/Brown 2020 campaign in 2018. Longtime friends with Jared.
(and now people I have less details for, but they’re gonna pop up)--
JD Morgan, Communications Director: writes to the last minute on speeches. Much more left-wing than some of the other staff, but a reluctant realist. Divorced twice; deceptively easygoing. Never gets sent to talk to the press because he’ll probably curse.
Alex Calvert, Deputy Communications Director: actually a republican, but of the Goldwater type that doesn’t exist anymore; fervent believer in personal freedom, individual rights, and money getting out of politics (aw, Alex. Good luck with that.). Much more aware of deadlines than his boss. Vicious and effective on political talk shows.
Genevieve Cortese, Press Secretary: tiny, smiling, perfectly bland in the face of a million camera flashes. Dual degree in marketing and political science from UC Berkeley. Worked in the fashion industry and then in the environmental lobby, which is where she met Danneel.
Not sure if it's really a trope, but I love me some frottage. I find it hotter than penetrative sex. Like they're so turned on they can't even wait long enough to mess around with prep and all that. That is some good shit.
ooooh me too. i’m 100% here for frottage, penetrative sex is over-rated and shouldn’t be the be-all end-all ultimate sex act for everyone, anyway! god, there’s so many wonderful ways to get off.

Summary:
Dean smooths out the scrunched paper. It's a flier for some bar in town, pictures of a band on the front and "ONE NIGHT ONLY" screaming from the headline. "What is this?"
"It's tonight only!" Sam spouts unnecessarily.
"I can read," Dean replies. "Who is Steamboat Vertigo and why do I care that they're only here for one night?"

Sometimes it feels like they’ll never escape the darkness.
They spend their lives searching for the monsters that lurk under little children’s beds and killing them when they decide to come out to play. Darkness is their friend because shhhh, the people can’t know what goes on when their asleep, they can’t know what happens in the blackest of nights.
As much as darkness is their friend, however, it is also their enemy. Spend too long living in the shadows and they will start to take over your life. They will squash any form of light that you have left and they will grow and spread like a disease until all you can see is the endless tunnel.
Sam saw the light for a long time. He used to believe that there was something better out there than just hunting for him and Dean and he used to want to find it. He thought he had with Jess and Stanford but then that went up in flames and the light grew smaller. Every year he hoped and every year the light diminished until his spark eventually died because he had this darkness in his very blood and he can’t fight or run for much longer. There’s only so many times you can watch people you love die before hope and happiness become futile and irrelevant. He still wants so badly to believe that there is a way out, but he knows that there is nothing left for him in life but darkness and shadows.
Dean admired Sam for his belief. All he’s known since he was a kid was hunting, and he knows that that’s what he’s made for. He had one year away from it all, he let the sun shine into his life for one year and he found that he doesn’t belong. He enjoyed the year with Lisa and Ben and he wishes that he could have something permanent like that but once you know the truth about the real world you can never go back to normality. Every time he heard the slightest noise, every time silence descended on the house, he would see the shadows lurking in the corner and he almost wanted to go and join them.
But, though they don’t realise it, even in the darkest of lives there is a light. It may be small, it may be weak, but it’s there. For Sam and Dean, it’s the little things. A quiet night spent staring at the stars in silence. A Netflix binge on the couch in the Bunker. A decent meal that’s actually home-cooked. They see the shadows, they see the rain, but they also see the light burning in the distance.

Summary: Sam got shot. Why can't they catch a fucking break once in a while.
Sam got shot. Of fucking course. They can't seem to catch a freaking break lately. Sam got shot and Dean's heart stopped for what felt like ten hours, but in reality it was closer to ten seconds he needed to get to his brother and tried to help him with shaking hands. He didn't even want to go on this stupid hunt in the first place and now Sam is hurt and bleeding out all over the floor and they are in the middle of the fucking nowhere.
The guy they saved want to ditch Sammy, ungrateful little bitch, and Dean gets closer and closer to strangling him every time he suggests it. He catches the guy looking at Sammy again and his fingers curl into fists unconsciously. And Sam, his observant smart Sammy sees that even when there is a trail of his fucking blood behind him. Sam just grunts one little warning 'Dean' and all the flight leaves him. He is at Sam's side in two seconds, checking him all over again. And Dean needs to stay angry. Once he stops he knows he will have full blown freak-out. The panic simmers right under his skin. The worry squeezes his heart and settles heavily in his lungs. He cannot loose Sam, he just can't. Not like that, not to this hunt, not in this fucking cabin in the middle of fucking woods. And it is not like they both didn't die already more then once, they have been through it before, but there's only this many times you can trick your fate and Billy did say next time they die, they die for good and Dean doesn't have any doubts she was not kidding. The guy mutters about leaving Sam here again and Dean is about to punch him in his stupid fucking face but Sam's hand in the collar of his jacket keeps him firmly in place. He looks back at Sam. He is getting paler.
"Everything's going to be alright, Sammy, I'm gonna get you out of here, okay? Just save your strength and energy and we'll get you to the car in no time." Dean places one long kiss to Sam's temple and goes out to gather some wood to make a fire. He really does that mostly to gather his thoughts, they don't even need the fire, they won't stay here for long. Not when it looks like there is more blood outside of then inside Sammy.
Later after everything, after having his heart ripped out by the sight of Sam on that floor, after leaving him there like he was nothing, like he wasn't Dean's whole world, his only reason to live and the one thing he hoped he will never loose again, after nearly dying himself and Sam being the badass motherfucker he is, saving his ass from that fuck face while barely staying conscious, after making three different doctors confirm Sam won't die, after short drive to the first motel out of that fucking town, after getting Sam into the shower and into the bed, after curling himself around his baby brother, mindful of his injuries, after all that finally, fucking finally Dean allows himself to breath. Feeling Sam's heartbeat under his palm, the best fucking feeling ever, Dean relaxes. Melts into that beautiful strong body next to him. And even though the doctors said Sam was mostly fine, he didn't let himself believe it up until this moment, when he has Sam breathing and whole and save in his arms.
"Fuck, I told you this hunt was a bad idea", Dean says into a mop of Sam's soft hair.
Sam chuckles quietly but after a beat adds, "at least we saved Michelle's life. We killed couple of werewolves. We did good today."
"Yeah, but you could've died, hell you practically did, that was close one Sammy, too close", he snuggled closer to Sam, who was lying flat on his back allowing his ribs to rest.
"I'm okay Dean though, it takes more than a gunshot wound, a little bit of chocking and a freshly bit werewolf to take me out," hearing Sam trying to joke lamely brings a little smile to Dean's face.
"Yeah, you were a badass today, I gotta give you that. Taking out that two werewolves by yourself while bleeding out, getting to the car on your own, saving my ass again. That was some crazy shit, Sammy. I'm proud of you. Just... Let's avoid you having to do this anytime soon. And by anytime soon I mean never."
"Mhm, yeah. Same goes for you," Sam brings Dean down for a kiss by the back of his neck, raking through his hair with the other hand, "I know you thought I was dead and I know you did something about it," Dean freezes up, "you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, I'm just happy that whatever you did wasn't stupid enough to get you hurt". And yeah, Dean is definitely not explaining to Sam what really happened, even though he feels a little bit guilty about that.
Dean looks down at Sam, this beautiful man who he helped raised and can't stop the shaky breath that leaves him. Damn, that was really close. Really, really close. And seeing that lifeless body on a dirty floor brought out the worst nightmares. He will need a couple of days to cool off, that will probably be spent in bed with Sammy, listening to his heartbeat, marveling at how his skin is warm and soft and not dead cold. And making out, definitely making out. Trying to breathe even more life into Sam's lungs and getting all those little moans he loves so much out of his brother. Yeah, just give him couple days and he will be able to stop his hands from shaking and his throat from closing up with pure horror of seeing Sam dead.

As much as it sucks, getting injured isn’t the worst part of hunting.
Getting injured isn’t even the worst part of getting injured, although Sam can attest that it does, in fact, hurt like a bitch.
The worst part is what comes right after. The frenzy, the panic in Dean’s eyes that, for a few seconds, overshadows everything until they can gauge how bad it actually is and whether something has to be done about it right now. Some injuries are worse than others. Some require immediate attention, others not so much.
Sam can’t remember a time where Dean’s hands didn’t shake when he patched Sam up. It doesn’t matter because Dean can put a bullet through the skull of a fast-moving target from a hundred feet away and a little tremble in his fingers doesn’t deter him from making an accurate job of some stitches.
There were no stitches this time because they were in the middle of the woods without so much as a first-aid kit on them. Dean’s hands were unsteady but Sam barely noticed this time because he himself was shaking like a leaf. Rationally, he knew the bullet wound to his stomach wasn’t fatal, a clean through-and-through, and if they could find a way to stop the bleeding and get back to civilisation before infection set in, he was going to be fine.
It was the pain that did a number on him. He could virtually feel himself going into shock.
It always seems a little like a dream after. He’s got professional stitches that are covered in sterile bandages now, several grades up from the usual dental floss and whiskey, and he’s a little floaty on the painkillers. He’d rather not have taken them because they always make him feel out of it, not ready for when sudden danger strikes, but he’s got his brother next to him, Dean’s shoulder gently bumping his as they leave the hospital, and Sam feels safe enough for the moment.
“So, what did you do then you thought I was dead?” he asks Dean in the car and regrets it immediately when Dean’s face freezes, smile turning forced instead of relieved. It’s a minuscule change and anyone who hasn’t known Dean for upside of thirty years most likely wouldn’t notice.
Sam notices but doesn’t say anything when Dean reflects. He isn’t sure he wants to know after all. He distantly remembers Dean being hauled into one of the examination rooms as well but maybe he dreamed that for real.
If Sam had to choose something about getting injured on a job that he isn’t too upset about, it would be the aftermath. When the pain slowly fades, when they finally get to rest — for once forced to make time to rest, which they too rarely do. Having left the shock and the panic behind them, Sam has all the time in the world to enjoy Dean’s little ‘Sammy got hurt’ antics. It would be funny how not subtle his big brother is in his coddling but Sam can’t exactly say that he hates it.
“You need anything?” Dean asks for the second time already and he blushes pink when Sam grins at him, and adds, “Shut up.”
“No,” Sam says quietly, turning onto his side with some effort, “I don’t need anything.”
Dean gently slaps his thigh. “Lie back and stop moving so much.”
“I’ll lie back if you stop hovering and come here.”
If Dean thought Sam is above a little blackmail, then he’s thought wrong. He slides his palm across the mattress, inviting his brother into the empty space in the curve of his body, and Dean sighs.
“Sam, I don’t—”
“You’re not gonna hurt me. Please, just—come here.”
Maybe it’s not fair to go the pleading routine, make it so that Dean can’t say ‘no’ but Sam’s too tired not to be selfish. He isn’t hurting as much anymore but he’s still sore and he doesn’t know how much actual sleep he can get tonight. He at least wants Dean next to him.
Dean sighs again before his hands go to his belt and his shimmies out of his jeans. He dips the mattress with his weight and Sam briefly has to grit his teeth through the stab of pain in his abdomen from being jostled. Dean settles then, stretched out next to Sam but not touching him, melting into the mattress with a sound of contentment.
He closes his eyes and Sam takes in the lines around them, around his mouth, takes in his ashen skin, and his dry lips. He looks just as tired as Sam feels and Sam hooks his arm around the back of Dean’s neck on impulse, pulling him closer until he can nuzzle the side of his face.
“Are you ever gonna tell me what happened at the hospital?”
Dean tenses, then relaxes. His fingers trace the length of Sam’s naked arm up to the sleeve of his T-shirt and under, splaying over the round of Sam’s shoulder.
“Maybe,” he says and it’s enough for now.
Sam’s lips finds the corner of Dean’s mouth and for a moment, it turns into a real kiss. It’s slow and soft, both of them too exhausted for more, but necessary and Dean tastes like chemicals and the coffee he stopped for on the way back to the motel.
Sam hums, brushing his mouth along Dean’s jaw. “It’s over now. We’re both still here. As always.”
He can feel Dean swallow and draw in a shuddery breath before he allows, “Yeah. As always.” He chuckles but it’s devoid of humor. “Makes you wonder when our luck’s finally gonna run out.”
“It didn’t today,” Sam says, “That’s all I know.”
Dean nods against him and Sam notices the shiver, notices how cold Dean’s hands are, but he doesn’t say anything, just draws his leg up between both of Dean’s and turns his body more into his brother’s to wrap one arm around him.
Dean gives another shudder, length of his spine trembling under Sam’s fingertips but he lets himself be maneuvred, careful of Sam’s bandages and sinks into the embrace. His palm strokes under Sam’s T-shirt to rest on his belly, next to the wound.
Sam smiles as his eyes slide closed and he settles into the pillow, counting Dean’s breaths until he falls asleep.
