The tide pod challenge was a ridiculous and dangerous one. It’s similar to the cinnamon challenge, where individuals were dared to eat large amounts of cinnamon on video, the end result being that many people (too many people) coughed clouds of cinnamon powder into the air or just throw up on camera. The tide pod challenge was like that, just eating tide pods on camera instead of spoonfuls of cinnamon, and instead of just coughing up clouds of cinnamon, people ended up in the hospital for eating essentially poison. This challenge was mostly done by young adolescents who had watched videos of the cinnamon challenge and wanted to “step up” the challenge and were either too young, or too dumb to understand the consequences of eating laundry detergent.

The craze of the cinnamon challenge and the tide pod challenge happened years apart. The target audience for this meme would be the people who experienced the craze that was the cinnamon challenge first hand, people who saw the videos as they were uploaded or even participated in the challenge. People who, after the craze had passed, understood how idiotic and possibly dangerous the cinnamon challenge had been and then heard second hand of the tide pod challenge that younger people had begun to do and saw the dangerous effects that the challenge had. And how it didn’t stop young people from participating in it. 

The meme was created to simply mock those who were foolish enough to participate in the tide pod challenge. it’s a way for the people who were involved in the stupidity of the cinnamon challenge to look down on someone else for participating in a more extreme version of the same challenge. One generation of people looking down on the next generation, shaking their heads at their stupidity as if they weren’t the one to start it, as if they weren’t the ones who set the example.
