From Chris Flowers: Since nearly my first month as an official Peace Corps Volunteer I have traveled to the village of Ciorescu for an English Speaking Club with my friend and club partner Galina. Over these two years we've talked about pride, traveling, diversity, Martin Luther King Jr, American and Moldovan holidays and culture, plus many more topics. Several Peace Corps Volunteers joined me to help with the discussions as special guests. Even our friend Sumit performed his poetry during a visit to Moldova. I have loved every minute of these club meetings.
Today, as the end of the school year approaches, we held our last club. I wish all of the students I have met in Ciorescu success in all they do, many years, and good health. I will miss them. They prepared for me a thick envelope with good bye notes. I'm saving them for another day because I'm already missing these great kids and can't read then right now. Thank you Ciorescu! I love you all!
From Chris Flowers: Today I went to visit my partner for English Speaking Club in Ciorescu and participated in her 6th grade class. Today was an "ora deschise" which is a special class that is observed by other teachers so they can see the methods Galina used in her class. The students learned new vocabulary about after school activities, talked about what they do after school, and then interviewed me about extracurricular activities in America. I'm always impressed with her classes and enjoyed the opportunity to meet her 6th grade students. #rcpc http://ift.tt/2nwQjMy
Photo Scavenger Hunt
This winter and spring, my partner in Ciorescu, Galina Rusu, and I challenged our students in our English Speaking Club to participate in a Photo Scavenger Hunt. Each Sunday, for 4 weeks, Galina gave the children 5 objectives that they were to capture in photos. The kids teamed up in pairs and took photos of things they thought met the criteria.
For my American friends back home, this 8 minute video will give you a great way to see the ways that Moldova is similar to America and the ways we are different. You’ll see their school, the main streets in their villages or cities, quiet parks, grocery stores, their school notebooks, and favorite trees.
This video is part of an exchange we are doing with the Human Rights Club at Campbell County High School in Kentucky. The students there also sent us photos of similar places in their home and our students on Friday had the chance to compare the two.
Big thank you to the students in both countries and my partner teachers in each place, Galina Rusu and Bridget Brown.
From Chris Flowers: Part 2 of our discussion of pride at English Speaking Club: we listened to Nelly Ciobanu singing Moldova Mea (My Moldova) which describes all the many reasons someone should be proud to be Moldovan. #rcpc http://ift.tt/2loIDLi
From Chris Flowers: Today at English Speaking Club in Ciorescu we talked about pride. They debated whether pride was a good thing, a bad thing or both. In the end they wrote 5 things they are proud of on their hands. I love these discussions with our club. I an very proud of them. #rcpc http://ift.tt/2mlvhwQ
