The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train wreck of June 22, 1918, killed en estimated 86 and injured 127 of the 400 performers and roustabouts aboard the train near Hammond Ind. The circus, one of the largest at the time, was heading to Hammond for a performance when an empty troop train piloted by engineer Alonzo Sargent, who had been previously fired for sleeping on the job, barreled into the circus train from behind at full speed destroying three sleeping cars.
