The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train wreck of June 22, 1918, killed en estimated 86 and injured 127 of the 400 performers and roustabouts aboard the train near Hammond Ind. The circus, one of the largest at the time, was heading to Hammond for a performance when an empty troop train piloted by engineer Alonzo Sargent, who had been previously fired for sleeping on the job, barreled into the circus train from behind at full speed destroying three sleeping cars. Remembering the Hammond Indiana Circus Train Wreck of June 22, 1918 and those lost of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus troupe. One of the worst train accidents in history. Of the 400 performers and roustabouts on the train 86 died and 127 were seriously injured. Some died on impact as the trains collided other suffocating and burned to death trapped under the rubble. The caboose was obliterated and the body man riding it was never recovered . A mass grave was dug At Showman’s rest.
