You’ve probably seen that I love Sigma and Diana very, very much.
I could talk about the moon symbolism that’s interwoven beautifully into every facet of their relationship. Or, I could talk about how the caged bluebird motif pops up again and again, and how most people who’ve played ZTD feel the urge to cry whenever Blue Bird Lamentation begins to play.
But above all that, what I appreciate most about these two is that, in spite of all the timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly stuff, they’re written like a pair of flawed human beings. In ZTD, Sigma’s emotionally distant, bottling things up to keep everyone around him cheerful, and when that emotion comes out, it’s not expressed in a healthy way whatsoever. Diana, meanwhile, has clear symptoms of PTSD, symptoms that the confined environment is only intensifying, and when her eventual breakdown happens, it’s devastating.
Forming a relationship doesn’t magically fix these issues. Having sex doesn’t magically fix these issues. This isn’t a ‘happily ever after’ relationship, because they’ve both been through far too much. Rather, it’s one based on hard-won trust, honesty, and loyalty. And that’s a good message for any relationship.
