When I draw or paint a city map, that place become my virtual escape, the place my mind goes for distraction from whatever is stressing me. My eyes walk those streets as I draw them. I wonder about the block patterns and form ideas about why the grid moves this way or that, etc. With this one, I wonder, have I been in this spot? Is this the route we took from here to there? With this one, there is so much urban fabric inviting my rumination! That’s good because I’ll be drawing it for the next two weeks, probably! It’s a big one. Brooklyn, New York. This is definitely one of the biggest city maps I’ve drawn, both the greatest density and largest area. I love all these little black lines following the grids that make up the complex patchwork of this historic borough. I’m enjoying the feeling of it’s old streets, the history of average people living out their lives, immigrants and “hipsters” building Brooklyn in place and vibe.
