Our day @ #HAPA; (from top): with UWW students and our hosting HAPA Principal looking at recent student testing achievements; in the retrofitted metals workshop turned art studio, with both of our hosting Principals and UWW students; taking a moment to admire cute, child-sized winter footwear outside of a cooperating teacher's classroom
Here's a short video about HAPA's mission and values.
All spaces suffer the burdens of social contradictions. None are insulated from racism, sexism, homophobia, and classism. As such, all spaces carry the capacity and power to enable, restrict, applaud, stigmatize, erase, or complicate threads of youth identity…

To Milwaukee We Go!
Tomorrow, we are off into the field! We will be touring our two field sites, the Hmong American Peace Academy (also known as HAPA), and the Indian Community School (also known as ICS). Both schools are excellent, albeit different, examples of educational settings that employ #culturally-relevant and #multicultural teaching practices to engage youth and community.
So far in our course, we have talked about place and culture (in tandem with reading Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street and Gary Howard's We Can't Teach What We Don't Know). Tomorrow we will begin to see both of these processes at work as observers and participants in an environment that is new for most of us. It is my hope that as fieldwork progresses, we as a class and an extended community (with members of our respective schools) can continually reflect on what it means to engage in meaningful urban educational experiences that affirm the people and places we encounter.
Pictures from our trip coming soon!...
