Came back from the trip, and o, boy, I was not expecting this. It crushed me entirely ( I went to the Vukovar, Croatia). Every year 8. graders go to trip to Vukovar to learn about war, how horrific it is, consequences , victims of war, peace and that such a crime must never ever happen again in Croatia.
In 1864. the Geneva Convention on the method of warfare was adopted (protection of the wounded, surrendered soldiers, they must not be tortured, etc.)
in the Homeland War for Croatia that rules were violated, civilians were taken to camps, tortured and killed, (Croatia did not have an army because it was still in Yugoslavia at the time and had only volunteers coming from all around Croatia and world, ordinary people who had so much love for the state) and the volunteers were killed, and in order not to prolong it, I will only tell the places we visited and why
Water tower, symbol of Croatian strength
Ovčara mass grave (200 people were killed, 60 are still wanted and one person managed to escape)
Memorial cemetery for the victims of the Homeland War (938 people buried, the youngest was 6 months old, the oldest 104 years old)
Church of St. Filip and Jakov
Why am I telling you all this?
Why am I posting all this?
Because, it doesn't matter it happened 30 and something years ago, it's still happening, but not to my country but to the Ukraine and Russia, and Israel and Gaza. It doesn't matter (ok it does but) who's aggressor, people die on every side and civils are treated unhumanly. So, if I learned something from this trip, it's that we don't need more war, more murders, we need peace, the only thing everyone ever wanted. Stop the war!
