Hi! I'm the HSPS offer holder and I'll tell you as much as I can about my application to help out with that ask you got :) At GCSE, I got 7A*s and 4As. I go to a state comprehensive school in the North West, and depending on the strength of the yeargroup, typically around 2-3 people get into Cambridge and 2 into Oxford... last year it was one Cambridge, this year it was two etc... At AS Level I studied History, Government and Politics, French and English Lit. In History I got 90% UMS... (1/2)

(2/2).... in Politics I got 100% UMS, in French I got 97% UMS and in English I got 86% UMS including a B in the exam. I dropped English and this year my target grades on my UCAS form were put as A*AA, but in my reference my teacher put A*/A for all of them. As for my interview, I felt good about it at the time; found one of them really hard, but I was expecting that? But as time went on I felt a lot worse about it! I applied for Trinity Hall and got an offer there; A*AA in any order :)

Also about HSPS, it does seem competitive but I think there were only 27 applicants at Trinity Hall, and when you consider that 20% aren't interviewed and they take around 6-8 people, it seems a little more realistic? Hope I helped!_____________________________

I want to apply to Pembroke but I'm worried that I won't get in as my UMS may not be over 95%, and only 1/5 got on for HSPS last year! Trinity Hall is my second option, with 1/4 accepted for HSPS. I would love to go to Trinity Hall or Pembroke; but Newnham accepted almost 1/2 of HSPS applicants last year!! But, I'm unsure about it's distance and all girls nature. Should I not apply to Pembroke if my UMS is under 95, or would I have an equal chance at each college? Thankyou!! :)

So the data is too new to be making any seriously subject specific assumptions for HSPS (I usually only use the data if there’s at least a 5 year clear trend). So I would just use the normal tier system (HERE) which puts Pembroke and Tit hall into the same tier. Pembroke is more academic so they might have more of an emphasis on grades though. Pembroke is fine to apply to as long as your GCSE’s are where they should be (7+ A*s at GCSE) and you get 93%+ UMS. If your GCSEs are good enough (7+ A*s) and your UMS gets close (like 90+) I would say Tit hall is fine to apply to, maybe not so much Pembroke (if you really love Pembroke, go for it, but if you like Tit hall nearly as much, it might be a safer choice if your grades are more borderline). If you either (a) don’t have 7+ A*s at GCSE but still get like in the low 90′s for UMS or (b) get <90 UMS, I would consider somewhere like Newnham, any of the Tier 3 colleges really should be fine (see HERE for the whole list).

Ahh ok. Thanks. I get it know. I like that each city has an actual definition of measurement. But I can understand why I've never got it before because in Ireland streets and houses are not planned at all so this could not work. We measure everything by the distance between pubs, churches and chip shops.
