What's studying at Tit Hall like? I've received an offer to read History there, and am worried I won't fit in. Thanks.

Hi, why are you worried you won’t fit in? I am personally not aware of any stereotypes or problems with Tit Hall. It is quite a small college, so there won’t be that many people in the year, but that has both good and bad sides. I might need more information to help, but right now I’d say you don’t have to worry.

COLLEGE MATCH?? Hi, i'm applying for HSPS (politics and international relations track) and i'm struggling between Kings and Trinity Hall. I'm predicted a*a*a and got good gcses. I want very left wing, very political, lots of state students good social life/clubbing. I also need to have self catering. What are the general differences? Size and vibe etc, not really sure what you mean when you say edgy. x

I don't know about Trinity Hall, except for size - it's one of the smallest, especially in terms of the main College site, this could be a con in terms of being outgoing. However King's sounds right up your alley. You have grades good enough for tier 1, there is a very high state school students percentage, probably the leftest college, the students are quite outgoing and yes they are fairly edgy, meaning they are a bit alternative in some way for most part, but are very open and nice people. All rooms should have some access to self-catering (at least microwave & fridge) and I know some accomodation in 1st year also has ovens (rare in Cam). Any helpful experts for trinity hall?

Hello. Could I have a college match please! I’m female from state comp looking to study English and have GCSE results of 6A*, 7A and AAAA at AS (average UMS of 91%). I’m introverted, so definitely not a party college and ideally small! I’m happy to walk or cycle into town or to lectures and I’m not too worried about cooking facilities. So far I think I’ve narrowed it down to Trinity Hall and Sidney Sussex, so I’m interested in hearing about those colleges and any others you may suggest. Thanks!

Hi! :)I’m not sure if Tit Hall totally matches your vibe (wow that sentence sounded very 90s) but Sidney sounds quite good! It’s small in numbers and definitely introverted. There’s a lot of other small, introverted colleges but I’m not sure how bothered you are by their percentages of independent school students. If not, maybe check out Peterhouse and Magdalene too?There’s also Selwyn that while not wholly introverted, is quite cosy, chill, and friendly. It’s a bit more moderate in terms of student size, but it’s also next to Sidgwick site where the English faculty is, so that’s a plus!

Emmanuel or Trinity Hall for an independent school MML student? Thanks!

I’d say Emmanuel. Tit Hall is Tier 1 for MML and a lot more quirky and alternative. Tit Hall also has a higher percentage of students from maintained schools rather than independent so you might find it easier meeting people with similar educational backgrounds at Emmanuel.

Hello if you don't mind please can you help me w choosing between Queens' and Trinity Hall? My internal deadline is Wednesday yikes! I want a very down-to-earth and preferably quirky environment, very friendly, good accommodation, pretty buildings. Thanks v much

Hmm while this is a toughie, I’d say Queens’ have the edge. While Tit Hall is definitely on the quirky side, it is so in the terms of being alternative. So although the people are friendly, they may not be as down-to-earth as you’d like. Queen’s is definitely a very friendly college however.

In my personal opinion, both colleges have very nice accommodation and buildings but in different ways. Queens’ accommodation is on site for all 3 years which is very valued and while it does have some very ugly grey square buildings, it also has some beautiful ones too. All freshers tend to live in Cripps Court which is very good and all en-suite. In later years, it’s common to get a shared set with a friend. If this isn’t your thing, I’ve been told it’s possible to get single occupancy. On the other hand, Tit Hall accommodation is quite spread out, but I personally find it prettier. Freshers live on site, but there’s no en-suite. On site has lots of nice old looking architecture which seem to be more consistent than the hodge-podge of styles at Queens’. In later years, you live offsite and it can be very far away (up to 20 minutes from the main site). Accommodation is either on Thompson Lane or Wychfield site. While both locations are more modern looking, which some people may not like, I do appreciate the architecture of these sites. WYNG Gardens on Thompson Lane is en-suite accommodation and has double beds too. These sites have ovens and hobs in the kitchens while the kitchens on the main site don’t.

I think it’s a very close competition and Queens’ feels like a safer choice. But it definitely depends on what priorities you value more whether Queens’ or Tit Hall will be better for you.

Hiya! I'm applying to Cambridge 2019 and I want to study history and politics. And I was wondering if I could have a college match? I'm predicted A*A*A (A*'s in history and politics and an A in German) I'm pretty introverted but like to have 3-4 close friends. I love politics so much and would love political society type things. I'm kind of stuck between Trinity Hall, Selwyn and St Catharine's so if you could narrow it down that'd be awesome! Thanks! ~ Elliot

I think with introversion, St Catz is probably the best one. St Catz is the type of college that is for ‘extroverted introverts’. Selwyn is quite a happy medium, I’d say. Selwyn is more ambiverted than St Catz; very friendly. Tit Hall, on the other hand, is small and quirky so the ability to make a close friendship group is there, but they also tend to be more outgoing and mingle with other colleges.

However, with your love of politics, I’d say Tit Hall all the way. Their quirkiness stems from being very left wing and politically active! I’m sure the other colleges have political societies too and university-wide societies are a thing as well but yeah.. Tit Hall is good for that.

think i'm torn between corpus and tit hall !!! could you compare the two in terms of vibe and just experience really? i've seen them both described as fairly edgy and close-knit, but not much besides that.

thought of a part 2 to the corpus/tit hall q - what would each college be like if they were a person? tricky one sorry ;)

Hey! Again, apologies for how long it’s taken me to get to this! 

So, Corpus is much more close-knit than Tit Hall: you’ll see people from Tit Hall getting quite involved with societies and interacting with people outside of college, but Corpus is definitely a lot more insular - people tend to stick to socialising within college. Tit Hall is more politically involved - they’ve got quite a good feminist society (I believe) and I get a more left wing vibe from them than Corpus. I’d say Corpus is probably a bit more edgy than Tit Hall - Tit Hall kind of goes between being edgy/basic whereas Corpus is definitely more alternative. Both are pretty traditional.

Another thing to consider is accommodation and distance. At Tit Hall, you’re quite far away from the main site in second year, which I think fosters a lot of close-knit intra-year friendships, whereas at Corpus, I get the impression that friendships span year groups a lot more because people tend to be closer to the main site. It also means that at Tit Hall, you end up being up by the hill colleges in second year and you’re further away from town.

As for what they’d be like if they were people - I’d say Corpus is a bit like Professor Trelawney. A bit haughty, keeps to themselves, a bit odd etc. Tit Hall reminds me of fourth-year Hermione Granger - not in terms of the super academic-ness, but more in terms of being quite politically involved, steadfast, coming out of her shell etc.

Hi! I'm a girl applying for English with 8 A*s,1 A,1 B at GCSE and predicted AS A in Theatre Studies and A Level A*A*A English, History, Latin. Looking for a friendly, preferably historic (but not hugely important) college with green space or gardens. Have narrowed choice down to Newnham (concerned all female may be too narrow socially), Jesus, Trinity Hall but open to other suggestions. Music/chapel choir important though don't want huge weekly commitment. Advice/suggestions appreciated!

OK so obviously your grades give you an excellent chance of getting into any college, and I think your preferences for type of college match up fairly well with Newnham, Jesus and Trinity Hall, so I’ll focus a little on the music side. I don’t know much about the music at Newnham, but singers from Newnham sing in Selwyn Chapel Choir, and as far as I know, Selwyn has a pretty active music society. That would also widen your social circle to Selwyn. Jesus choir is also high quality, and for women it’s also a medium commitment in terms of time. I’ve heard good things about the music going on in Jesus aside from the chapel as well, and Jesus is also situated really close to the ADC, if you fancied getting involved in theatrical music. Trinity Hall is probable the lowest commitment of the three choirs you’ve mentioned, but not by much. I think if you want gardens, Newnham is the place to go to (or Selwyn actually), and that would mean you’d be nice and close to your department too. A final thought is that Sidney Sussex fits your criteria quite well as well - it has a medium commitment choir, nice gardens and is fairly old.
