Caroline was pacing nervously in the girls’ bathrooms, stopping every minute or so to obsessively fluff her hair or check her make up. She was incredibly nervous. It was hard to believe that she could feel this way really; she could hardly claim to be unaware of Klaus’ feelings for her. He had been pursuing her, both openly and covertly, for the past year and although she had initially resisted she had finally admitted to feeling more than simple attraction to the Original Hybrid.
Then Tyler had left Mystic Falls, making it clear he was never coming back thereby putting their increasingly rocky relationship out of it’s misery and removing the final obstacle to her giving Klaus a chance. She was planning on telling him so this evening at The Grill.
However, instead of feeling the expected relief at being able to just give in and let go she seemed to have simply opened the door to another form of anxiety.
Who could blame her? Sure, he was a very hot man and completely into her (apparently), but without a doubt there had been many women in his long, long life. He claimed to love her, said that he had never felt anything similar over his many years, but that only soothed her a little.
She was only 18 freaking years old. She wasn’t completely without experience, but she couldn’t hope to have even a tiny proportion of his sexual expertise. Surely she was going to disappoint him?
Stopping in front of the washbasin she looked her reflection in the eye. Telling herself to take a deep breath and just chill, she tried to gather her nerves, only to startle when the door from the hallway opened to admit the new girl from her English class.
“Hey, Angie,” Caroline returned with something less than her usual sparkle.
“Everything OK?” the other girl queried, clearly picking up on Caroline’s agitation.
“Yeah, like of course, no problems here, I’m good, really.”
“Oh-Kay,” Angie replied slowly with a slightly trepidatious look, as if she were talking to a potentially violent person, or handling an unexploded bomb.
“You know what? No actually, I’m not OK. I’m kinda stressed.”
“Mmhm, I can see. What’s the problem? Vending machine out of Diet Coke again?”
Caroline looked up at that, confused, “what?”
“Sorry, forget I said anything,” Angie said hastily, a small, guilty smile on her face.
“Tell me what’s bothering you, perhaps I can help?”
“Really? That would be so good, “ Caroline confessed. “I just need to talk to someone about this and I know that you’re new here and everything but I feel like you really get me. And, frankly, this is so not the sort of thing I can go to my friends about”
“Is it a quick something? Or do you wanna grab some food after class?’
“Yeah, actually. That would be good. Then I can say that we’re going over our scene for the production, and we won’t be interrupted. Have you got the script?”
Angie’s reply was a nod and Caroline heard what sounded like soda cans banging together in the other girl’s bag as she patted it in confirmation.
“Great. See you at The Grill, 6ish?”
--------------------------------------------------
Seated at The Grill, waiting for Angie to arrive, Caroline was starting to wonder how she was going to broach the subject she needed to discuss. The initial excitement she had felt at the thought of being able to share her anxieties had been slowly replaced by concern about how she could reveal such personal stuff to a virtual stranger. Could she trust her to keep it to herself?
The waitress arrived with the menus at that point and Caroline ordered drinks. She sat, legs crossed, jiggling her foot as she waited, watching the door from the prime seat. The grill was busy, but Caroline had snagged her favourite booth without difficulty. Vampire perks, she mused happily. As the slightly smug thought crossed her mind, relief washed over her. How had she forgotten compulsion? The only possible excuse was that her stress levels were frying her brain. She could unburden herself to Angie and then compel her if she thought things weren’t going to go well.
The door opened and the girl in question crossed the restaurant towards her. Yeah, she was pretty cool really, Caroline reflected. She was super organized, keeping detailed notes on their performance schedules and always turning up on time for meetings, which was a welcome relief after last year’s flaky drama partner.
The drinks arrived as Angie sat and she reached for the Diet Coke as they exchanged greetings. Caroline mentally patted herself on the back for guessing her order right, while taking a sip of her own drink.
“So what do you recommend?” Angie asked, studying the menu.
“The nachos are good,” Caroline offered.
“Yeah, but you’ve got to be careful of the salsa when you eat Mexican at a new place for the first time.”
“I know, right? It can go so wrong! But the stuff here is just on the bearable side of authentic. Should we share?”
Having agreed on that and placed their order, Caroline relapsed once again into an awkward silence. Even with the reassurance of compulsion, bringing this up was going to be difficult.
“Soooo…” she began, looking everywhere but at her companion.
Angie waited with a patient expression for her to continue. OK right, spit it out, Caroline thought to herself.
“Right…? And the problem is…?”
“He’s a bit older, like a lot older. And he says he likes me. Like, really likes me. And I like him, I think, well no, I do obviously. But, um… he’s, you know, probably had a few girlfriends or whatever in the past. And so I’m, sorta...”
Angie had been smiling but towards the end of that ramble she had started to laugh a little.
“Caroline, you’re beautiful, head cheerleader, straight A student. What guy wouldn’t like you? And he’s telling you he does. What have you got to be worried about?”
“Thanks, but you know there have been a few who could resist me. To say the least. In fact until this guy, I wondered if I would ever be anyone’s first choice,” Caroline babbled on. Wow, she reflected, it was so much easier to open up when compulsion was on the table. “But he doesn’t really know me yet. I mean, he thinks he does but we’ve never even kissed, never mind… you know, done anything else. So …”
“So you want to impress him in bed? Don’t you think he’s just going to be happy you’re there with him in the first place?”
“Well, yeah, sure. Of course he will. But I don’t want to be just another girl to him. I want to completely blow him away.”
“So that’s totally what you should do.”
“Right, but how am I-oh….! I get it”
“What could be hotter than that? They love it, according to Cosmo you know.”
“Yeah, I’ve tried it a few times but I don’t know, how much can you really do with the whole blow job thing? Surely it’s just cock-in-mouth-suck?”
“NO! There are loads of possibilities! Look, let’s do some research,” and she hauled her laptop out of her bag and opened google. “I’m going to start a spread sheet,” she continued as she started to type and Caroline looked on in awe as Angie started to plan.
By the time the nachos were nearly finished the girls had a three page detailed spreadsheet of ideas and plans. Columns headed “situation”, “position”, “dirty talk” and “technique” were all filled in and illustrated with hyperlinks to articles or blog posts. A reference page appendix included some of the more useful resources.
“Now all you have to do is decide which of these elements would most appeal to your man, and put them together.”
“This is super helpful, thank you! I mean obviously I can use it to plan this time but then I can just mix it up for the next time and I’ll virtually never run out of ideas.”
“Or you might want to just order off menu, so to speak?”
Caroline shot her an incredulous look.
“No, OK, I can see that wouldn’t be as good”
Laughing together they finished the last of their drinks as the door to The Grill opened to admit one very hot, Henley wearing, stubbled man. His gaze landed on Caroline who immediately flushed slightly as her spine straightened almost imperceptibly and her breaths shortened.
“Caroline, hello,” he greeted her. “Can I offer you a drink? And your friend?”
“This is Angie, Klaus, we were just studying.”
“Ah, don’t let me interrupt you then, love,” he said as he started to turn away.
Beside her Angie was making frantic gestures with her eyebrows, indicating Caroline should not let him leave, and she decided that she might as well bite the bullet, so to speak.
“Hey, Klaus! Wait up! We’ve nearly finished actually and I wanted to talk to you.”
“Of course, sweetheart,” he said. “Here?”
“Um, no. Maybe at your place?”
“Alright, shall we say 20 minutes?”
Caroline smiled and nodded decisively and he turned and left the grill once again. “No time like the present,” she said with a grin as she packed up her stuff. “I’m going to start with 1a, 10, 15 and 17.”
“Go get him!” Angie said with a smile.
“Yeah, you know what? Fuck 20 minutes,” Caroline replied with a laugh. And with that she turned and sped out of the restaurant after Klaus.
