A few resources for understanding the complexities of race and ethnicity in the Caribbean and Latin America more broadly, which differs greatly from identity and racial dynamics in the north. The first two articles are for an overall introduction while the last few links are focused more on different local contexts and span topics such as colourism, mestizaje, skin bleaching and anti-blackness.
One of the points that Dr. Stacy-Ann Wilson alludes to briefly in the video on race and ethnicity in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago that I wanted to highlight is that even though she studied at an all-black college, that didn't necessarily equate to an awareness of the distinct dynamics that exist in the Global South amongst her colleagues—something I have noticed, too, but don't tend to see acknowledged.
Aside: I think it is very damaging to study a culture—or see your own culture—solely through another's lens and can't stress the importance of developing these local, regional and south-south connections.
