You follow MLP G5, don't you? I must confess the first previews failed to catch my interest (didn't like the overtly contemporary tech and cultural landscape, not to mention the writing came off as kinda Illumination-esque, if you know what I mean), but it seems the fanbase has grown considerably since then, what would you say are its strong and weak points?
Yeah, I've been following the series since the initial movie that introduced it.
Sadly, I haven't been able to properly watch the 'Make Your Mark' series as I don't have Netflix currently, so I've had to get a general idea of what happened in that through clips on Youtube, but I think I got the general idea of the story.
I think for me, the thing I enjoy most are the characters. All of them are fun to watch and have entertaining personalities that bounce off each other really well and despite the main cast being another 'mane 6', none of them feel too similar to the FiM group to me, which is a plus. They're all unique in their own ways.
The songs in the series are pretty decent too. The characters all sound great when singing together and Pipp, especially, has an amazingly strong singing voice.
I think the way the series was done was a weak point in that they split it up into the 3D 'Make Your Mark' series, where they released specials or a small group of episodes at a time, then they have the 2D animated 'Tell Your Tale' shorts on Youtube where the continuity seemed a little off at times. It just felt like a very disjointed way of doing things to me.
The relation it has to MLP:FiM is cute and I like how Twilight and her friends have a very 'legend' legacy in G5, though I do feel FiM doesn't entirely fit into the G5 story and setting (again, it feels a little disjointed and there are, again, some weird continuity things), but I don't think it was ever meant to be a strong 'continuation' or anything like that. In the G5 world, the adventures Twilight had and the time she lived in are now stories and legends.
Thankfully, though, they don't lean on it's connection to FiM too much, just when it's needed.
Currently, they have finished doing the 3D 'Make Your Mark' series and are now only doing the 'Tell Your Tale' animated shorts on Youtube (with occasional planned longer episodes.) 'Tell Your Tale' is definitely a lot more slice of life and goofy shenanigans, but it's really, really cute.
It seems like they're setting up a few plot points for things here and there, but again, only so much they can do in a 5 minute episode.
So strong points for me are the characters are fun, the songs are quite nice to listen to and in general it's a nice cute thing to watch.
Weak points is the way they've presented the series has made the story and setting feel a little disjointed to me overall.
