Can you describe Alex´s darkness?

Sure! I mean, here’s what I will say about it: 

Season 1 of Thirteen Reasons Why focused on Hannah Baker’s story, and what happened leading up to her suicide, and the after effects on the people she left behind. 

One of those people, was Alex Standall, and in that Season 1 finale, he shot himself in the head. 

So while Hannah Baker’s narrative was a tragic story of what happens when someone commits suicide and suceeds, there are a lot of narratives left untold about people who attempt suicide and fail. 

Alex is one of those people. I, am one of those people. And for those of us left behind, those of us who know that darkness but lived through it, where is our representation? Where is our example of how to lead ourselves towards healing?

I’m out of those woods now, but the reason I talk about my experiences so much is because I believe that by normalizing the conversation and talking about what I went through, I’m giving hope to people who are not quite where I am yet, and reminding them it gets better. And maybe, just maybe, I’m providing a bit of a roadmap.

Alex could have been that for SO many depressed teenagers -- teens who have attempted suicide at least once but have stuck around, whether by choice or by failure in attempts. 

But he isn’t. Instead, we just sort of “know” he’s depressed and leave that in the background, focusing more at times on his TBI (but barely even that) and then his guilt over killing Bryce Walker. In Season 4, we really just focus on his sexuality. 

And his coming out story is great, don’t get me wrong, but that’s not the only thing we needed from that character. We needed him to work through his trauma and showcase what the after effects of living with the reality that at one point you were trying NOT to be living truly are. And how to step away from that confusion and find a new, lighter path. 

A path that isn’t necessarily through the road or romance, either. 

If we were going to keep that romance (because I did love it and boy, he deserves it), we could have spent a lot less time on this weird “Monty and Bryce must somehow be humanized” scenario, and focused on ALEX instead. Because ALEX, is STILL ALIVE. And that is a BIG DEAL. 

Also, Alex is a reminder that not all depression is the same. Not all of us have the same story. And that’s why we critique Hannah so much -- because there is so little representation that is accurate of depression in media, we cling to whatever is presented to us and then crucify it when we can’t relate. Alex was another possible outlet to tell a new story about depression in teenagers.
