you had felt clancy gray’s eyes on you from the second you had been introduced to him. you would turn, and he’d be there. observing.
it was sort of unnerving at first. knowing that the eyes of the renowned slip kid were constantly on you, and only you. the only time they weren’t was when he was pulled away to his duties, or when you were pulled away to yours.
at dinner, it was much more awkward. you sat quietly on one of the makeshift seats, bowl in your hands. before you could take a bite, you felt his eyes. again.
you turned your head to see where he was watching you from. he was closer than you thought he’d be, and that made you jump. his mouth quirked upward at that.
“hey, sweetheart.” his tone was simple, conversational.
“uhm.. hi, clancy.” you say awkwardly. his eyes didn’t make you feel as anxious as they had awhile ago. now they made you feel a sense of slight comfort. knowing someone was pretty much always watching your back.
“shame we haven’t been able to talk too much, hm? i mean.. you’ve been here for a few weeks now.”
“you could just come up to me. i feel you always staring.” you immediately realized how rude you sounded the second the words left your mouth.
“oh? then why haven’t you approached me to ask about it?” he grinned at you.
“figured that’d be rude.” you say honestly.
“i wouldn’t have found it rude at all, sweetheart. taking initiative isn’t rude,” he hummed, watching your face.
“you think so?” you questioned.
“of course.” he extended a hand to you. “come with me. back to my room.”
what? “is this you taking initiative?” you snort half-heartedly, not actually expecting a genuine answer.
“obviously. you gonna take my hand or what, sweetheart?” he quirked a brow.
“..fine.” you sighed out, letting your own hand fall into his.
he slid his fingers around yours, lacing them together. “that’s better. you can come eat in my room.. i won’t mind. then we can finally talk.”
“for real?” you laughed.
“for real,” he affirmed, nudging you. “let’s go.”
you followed after him, a stupid smile on your face.

It was another magical night at East River. Sure, it might not have been perfect, but anything would seem magical after the two years you spent in Caledonia. You were sitting next to Clancy on a log in front of the campfire, listening to a young Yellow tell the story of when she first discovered her abilities. You tried to pay attention, but it was late and after a long day of working you could feel your eyes slowly drift closed. You felt an arm around you, and immediately jolted awake, before relaxing when you realized it was just Clancy pulling you over to rest your head on his shoulder.
You relaxed once more, and felt yourself beginning to drift off, the voice of the yellow and Clancy’s warmth lulling you to sleep. Just as you were about to drift off, you heard it. The steady thrum of helicopters nearing East River. You woke up immediately, looking to the sky to see three helicopters flying directly overhead. Before you could even stand up, trucks began driving in through the entrances. You were surrounded.

“Clancy, what’s happening?” you asked, panic rising in your voice.
But he didn’t say anything. Instead he stood up, beginning to walk over towards where the helicopters were lowering their ladders.
“Clancy?” you asked once more.
“I’m sorry,” he said, turning to look at you, before continuing to his destination.
You felt your entire body run cold. He knew about this. He planned this. East River was just a set up. Your so-called “paradise” had turned out to be a trap all along. You couldn’t think, you couldn’t even move, it felt like your entire world had just fallen apart. How could he do this to everyone? How could he do this to you?

You barely even registered the figures climbing down the ladders until you saw the flames begin to spread. So this had been his plan all along. Give up the location of East River to get the PSFs to come, and to bring Reds along with them. You sat there and watched in horror as the place you had come to call home went up in flames. Cabins burned and children screamed all around you. But you still couldn’t move.
You were betrayed. You were heartbroken. All you could think about was how stupid you had been. Why would Clancy ever love you? Sure you were both Oranges, but you had no idea how to use your abilities. He had tried to teach you how to use them, but it had been fruitless. About two months in you told him that it was pointless. He had assured you that it didn’t matter if you couldn’t use them, but you knew better. He saw himself as better than you, as better than everyone at East River. Maybe things would’ve been different if you could figure out your abilities. Or maybe he’s just too narcissistic to care about anyone else but himself.
Before you could even react, a pair of arms grabbed you harshly and zip tied your hands together, dragging you away from where you had been sitting. Slowly you registered the movement and realized what was happening. You were getting taken back to a camp. And judging by the fact of having already escaped a camp once, you were going to end up somewhere way worse than Caledonia.

It had almost been a year since you were taken to Thurmond. Almost a year since the guy you thought you love betrayed you and hundreds of other kids, all sent to camps or worse.
In that year, you had changed. You couldn’t remember the last time you had smiled. Hell, you haven’t even spoken a single word since you got here. You were a shell of who you used to be. Filled with nothing but anger and pain.
You were standing at a table lacing up boots, when you heard commotion growing outside. There was screaming and gunshots. You braced yourself for the Calm Control, but it never came. Before anyone could turn it on, the power shorted out. The door to the warehouse you were in burst open, and an army of kids stood on the other side. With none other than Clancy Gray standing front and center.

You felt yourself freeze, you hadn’t seen Clancy since that night. He looked like he hadn’t changed at all, but there was a certain age to him. His eyes were heavier, and he looked worn down. But still as angry as ever.
“Drop your weapons!” he shouted out.
Every single PSF in the room dropped their guns, their eyes growing milky at his words.
“Leave!” Clancy spoke once more.
The guards began walking, filling out the door and walking straight out of the gates of the camp. You looked around, seeing the shocked faces on all of the Greens standing around you. You had to pretend to be one of them to avoid getting killed.
“Today’s your lucky day! I’m recruiting you. No more rotting away in a prison. Join my army and fight back against all of the people that ever hurt you. We’re not staying silent anymore. Who’s with me?”
Everyone around you practically erupted into cheers. Relief and excitement filling their faces. But you knew better. You couldn’t trust Clancy. Not again. Not after what happened last time. But things were different this time, it turns out that a year alone in your head was all you needed to master your abilities.
And so you yelled your first word in almost a year.
“No!”
Everyone around you fell silent.

“Y/n L/n,” Clancy said as he walked towards you. “God it’s been what, a year now? I’ve been looking for you. You’d make a great addition to my army. Even though you can’t use your abilities, you can still hold a gun. Right?”
You ignored his jabs at you. “You’re controlling them, aren’t you? Why else would they be following you?”
“Ouch, so harsh. But if you must know, yes I am. How else are they supposed to keep fighting no matter what?”
“That’s fucked up Clancy. Can’t you see that?”
“So maybe it is. What are you going to do about it?”
“This,” you smirked. Looking at the kids standing behind Clancy you shouted, “Wake up!”
Instantly his control over them disappeared, hundreds of the kids collapsed from exhaustion, and a bunch of others started to run away. Clancy’s face fell as the realization finally hit him. You were an actual threat now.
“Impressive. Too bad you couldn’t figure that out a year ago. Why don’t you join me? We’ll lead side by side, getting rid of everyone in our way.”
“There is no way in hell that I am ever working with you,” you said, glaring at him.
“Fine, have it your way.”
Clancy stared at you, his eyes turning Orange. You felt him beginning to prod at your mind. But you stayed strong, fighting him off and keeping him out. Clancy’s smug face faltered as he kept trying to enter your mind.
“What the-?”
“Guess I learned a lot more than you thought, huh?” you gloated.
You were about to walk away to help the sick and injured kids behind Clancy when you had an idea. You reached out and touched his hand.
“You don’t remember anything. And you don’t know how to use your abilities.”
Clancy’s eyes turned milky as he repeated the words you told him.
“I don’t remember anything. I don’t know how to use my abilities.”
“Leave.”
You pulled your hand back, but Clancy’s eyes didn’t turn back to normal. He turned around and began walking, out of Thurmond and into the forest.

clancy gray had told you time and time again that you could trust him. he’d helped you with your abilities, despite you not having the greatest hold on them. he was kind about it. he never rushed you. that’s what made you feel so special.
he was constantly slipping into your head when he trained you, but some part of you didn’t entirely mind. it was startling, almost. you couldn’t push him away or fight him off very well, but he always pulled himself back before he dug too deep himself.
today was no different.
you were stood in front of him, eyes locked on his face. his head tilted to the side, mouth quirking upward as he watched you.
“you’re staring.” it wasn’t a question.
“what else should i look at?” you quip back, raising a brow.
“you know what i meant. i like when you’re focused on me.” his tone was light, the words coming out simple. however, your face still flushed
“i, uh..” you faltered.
“don’t worry about it. let’s get started, yeah? you wanna try pushing me away again?” he questioned.
“yeah.” you affirmed, nodding your head.
he didn’t speak, but you know he heard you - you could feel him begin to creep into the corners of your mind, searching. everything at the top of your mind he’d seen before. you tried to fight him off, pushing back, putting up a wall - anything. you could feel the internal struggle between the two of you, but you were losing.
your thoughts drifted to him, hold on your walls faltering, before they crumbled entirely. before he could see what you were thinking, you grabbed his shoulders, snapping him out of it.
“woah-“ clancy blinked at you a few times, brows furrowing in concern. “you okay? i didn’t mean to push you too hard.” his voice was kind. it always was.
“yes.” you choked the word out, face heating up again - you could feel it, deeper this time. warmer. “what did you see?”
he paused for a moment. that made you go quiet too. you didn’t know what he saw, and that made your heart rate spike in panic.
“you were thinking of me.” his voice was softer now. you couldn’t meet his eye. “don’t be embarrassed. i didn’t know you thought of me that way.”
“i didn’t know i did either.” you admit quietly, staring at the ground.
“oh? so that was new.” there was a teasing lilt to his tone now.
“uh..” you didn’t know how to respond. even if you did, he didn’t give you enough time to figure out what to say. he slipped a finger under your chin, tilting your head to meet his eye.
“we were made for this. to be together. i’m glad you’re not afraid of me. afraid of what you are.”
“of course i’m not,” you say quietly.
“let me show you what you can do. i’ll open myself up to you, and you can open yourself up to me. how’s that sound?” he mused.
“..i’d like that a lot.”
he smiled warmly, dipping his head to kiss you. it was electrifying.
“clancy-” you gasped his name out, tangling your fingers in his hair.
he pulled back just far enough to whisper against your mouth, “i’ve wanted to do that for so long. you have no fucking idea.”
SUMMARY: Every time you think you’ve had a breakthrough with getting some of your memories back, you’re left feeling disheveled and confused. Completely unaware of Clancy’s mind control.

There were blurry spots in your memories that often made you worry. Some sort of block that gave you migraines around the clock. You often blamed the heat shining down on you. Perhaps dehydration...whichever it was made you fall behind on your assignments for the day. Your pain was too much to bear.
You wiped your forehead with the back of your hand as you entered the cabin. Your heavy breathing caught Clancy’s attention. He swiveled around, creases forming around his eyes and the bridge of his nose as he walked over to you.
“Hey, hey. Woah!” He rushed over to help you sit down. You were on the brink of fainting. “I got you, I got you.” He knelt down in front of you reaching forward to caress your skin. His love language. Touch, the physical contact. He once told you it made him feel safe. That knowing he was able to hold your hand, hug you, kiss you. For Clancy, it meant that everything was okay. You didn’t really understand it, but you gave up trying after running off with him. You knew you felt safe with him too. He was all you knew, the one person you still held onto from your pasts. You could only remember certain parts and bits, anytime you tried bringing up something to Clancy, you lost that train of thought instantly. You don’t even remember your parents. From what Clancy told you, they had abandoned you. It broke you finding out but the past was in the past. As Clancy liked to say. “Anybody in there...hello.” He laughed as you come back down to earth again. You hummed turning to look at his eyes.
“S-Sorry.” You tried to smile but the scrunch you made gave Clancy all the information he needed.
“The headaches again?” He frowned. Getting up to fetch your pain meds.
“I really thought today would be different...but they keep coming back.” You fall into your hands.
“Have you been drinking enough water? You know what being in the sun for so long can do to you.” He looked over his shoulder, then walked back. He stopped and crouched in front of you.
“Yes Cee, I have. That doesn’t mean it’ll prevent these stupid headaches from happening though.” You sigh, feeling more tired than usual.
He smirked seeing your annoyed expression. He rattled the bottle in his hand and twisted the lid off. “Well lucky for you...I’ve got just the cure.” He hummed. and handed over two little white pills. You threw them back into your mouth and took the water he offered you. Your shoulders fall, then relax in the silence that overcomes the cabin. Clancy reaches for your hand.
“Better?”
“A little.” You shrug. “I just- I can’t help but think that somethings wrong. Like I’m sick! I couldn’t even lift the bins with my mind today. Something is wrong with me Clancy and I think it has something to do with our past. I-I had a dream the other night...” He sat up straighter.
“What kind of dream?”
“There was screaming and yelling. I could have sworn I saw flashes of a woman. Maybe my mother!” You grip his hands.
“Y/n we’ve talked about this-” Clancy shuts his eyes, shaking his head.
“I know but something about this dream felt real. Like a memory pushed past this block that I seem to have. The block, Clancy! Maybe this could be a sign that my memories are-” You gasped as your mind became blank and your body froze.
“You didn’t see a woman. You didn’t see anyone...” Clancy frowns as his eyes flash orange.
“I-I didn’t see anyone.” You echo back to him. He reaches forward and caresses the side of your face again. He smiles seeing you locked in place.
“The dream you did have was of us. We’re at the lake...”
“At the lake...”
“We’re swimming, having a good time, splashing each other...kissing.” He whispers the last part.
“Swimming, having a good time, splashing each other...Kissing.”
“You don’t have a block, you’re fine, there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re beautiful and healthy. You love me and I love you. You came back here because you spent too much time under the sun, okay.” He tilts his head, smiling at you. He twirls a lock of your hair around his finger.
“I don’t have a block, I’m fine, there’s nothing wrong with me. I’m beautiful and healthy. You love me and I love you...I spent too much time under the sun.”
“Good girl..” He mutters under his breath. His eyes revert back to their original color as you come to again. “You okay?” He chuckles.
“W-What?” You blink rapidly.
“I lost you there for a second again. You’re headache gone? You know what the sun does to you. I hate it when you push yourself. You’re done for the day-”
“What wait no-”
“No, you’re done. I don’t need Mike running in here, telling me you’ve passed out in the garden bay. I won’t have it.” He stood up and guided you up to your feet. “How about a swim at the lake?” He pulls you in close. His lips attack your cheek sweetly then trail down to your neck. Your skin felt on fire to each press of his lips. You sigh relaxing into his attentiveness and touch. “Night swim, no one around, just us?” He whispers into your sweet spot before attacking it. He knows he has you as your head falls back.
“W-We’ll get caught...” You breathe out. “Someone will see us.”
“You leave that to me, okay? Just relax...” He smirks again, pressing one more kiss to your neck. As he lifts his head to look into your eyes, your body grows still. His eyes shifted to their orange color. “You be my good girl now, okay.” His thumb glides across your bottom lip. You nodded slowly as he caressed his thumb over your lips.
