Again, it’s important to recognize that Valter is literally incapable of feeling love. Maybe he was during some period of his life, but it’s a moot point now that he’s got his eggs scrambled. He could never love her, but could he utterly and terrifyingly obsessed with her, to the point where she should PROBABLY be a lot more concerned with her well being than she seems to be? Yes. Yes he could and yes he does.
When they first met, he didn’t think much of her. This is a man who thinks that strength is the defining characteristic of a person, after all. What could some random “tactician” who’d never known a day of battle have to teach him, the great and almighty Valter the Moonstone?
But then they started spending time together, and something very surprising happened. She (foolishly?) made him stronger than even he could have imagined. And that’s when he finally saw her true strength.
True, she kind of looks like she can be felled with a stiff breeze, but she has the unique power of “unlocking potential”. Thanks to her tireless efforts, he achieved true strength that never would have been possible in the world where he originates from, even if he trained for years and years. More than that, she has the ability to make any foe, no matter how powerful and terrifying, fight for her cause. And she doesn’t even have to threaten to destroy their families to do it! They just do.
It’s for that reason that he sees her as prey worthy enough to even be his equal. He can’t pledge loyalty to her – he’s too insane for that, and part of him is INSANELY CURIOUS to see how he’d fare against the army of heroes by her side if he were to suddenly flip and attempt to kill her. But what he CAN pledge is that no other miserable worm walking the planet will be allowed to sate themselves on her while he’s still breathing.
[Most of that is actually general fare for summoner characters, but on a more personal note, he finds her drop dead gorgeous, thinks her chill and laid back attitude is strangely calming, and thinks her beauty is only accentuated by the loss of her eye. As a guy who’s been through hundreds of battles, he finds scars to be a badge of honor more than a shameful defect.]
