the ocean in general—more specifically spending a day at the beach, running in the sand playing beach racket, swimming out to the buoy and racing my brother back (he always wins. I'm faster, but he's got much better stamina), collapsing exhausted on the towel and dozing off to the sound of the waves crashing below, only waking up a few minutes before sunset, and scouring the shore for pretty shells until the air gets too chilly to stay out. or that feeling of floating on your back, ears underwater and sunlight hitting your face, feeling like nothing in the world can harm you, like you exist outside of hurt and fatigue. or being on a long car ride to the seaside and finally seeing the promised ocean out the window after so many hours, like it's been waiting for you (equal parts foreboding and loving). or having drunk a little with friends and someone—can't even remember who at this point—suggests a midnight dip and everyone follows, laughing too hard and earning you impressed glances from passersby—how do they even do it, the water's so cold at this hour! they think, but they don't know the only way I like it is under twenty degrees and my belly is warm from the rum anyway.
waking up in the morning knowing I'm seeing friends or heading out to do something fun today. no matter how little I've slept, I'm always so full of energy
walking past a dog in the street and they trot up to me to sniff my legs and give me a grin—I always always grin back, and try very hard not to pet them because it's still an unfamiliar dog; but who's the best boy who deserves the best scratches hm? who's the bestest boy?
music!! finding the exact song that correlates to my mood, that works perfectly for the scenario I'm imagining or this piece I'm writing. feeling the lyrics, instruments, and melodies hit me to my core and intertwine with my blood. replaying the same part over and over because I didn't savor it enough. just getting lost in my own mental world with nothing but my music.
writing. at the end of the day, it's all about writing. and I don't think I'm good at it anymore, if I was ever good at it to begin with, but I miss it terribly.
