ah i misread the ask i responded to here, soupy is in fact the goalie from manitoba. (Campbell. Yeah that makes sense.)
there don't seem to be any latvian pwhl players, which is a bummer. the goldeneyes have a russian though! good for her
also. i posted a whole thing about it being tuesday. is it tuesday, my dudes? it is not, it is noon and i only just glanced at the upper right corner of my screen and noticed that it is. in fact. not tuesday.
double thumbs up
but yes! this did remind me to go poke the draft i'm dying in the process of trying to write, and now Soup is in his rightful place and has unstuck me from my pit of despair.
I need like.... a structural beta on this thing, someone to read 40k of it and be like yes you need to do this big pacing thing or maybe do this other thing, and i am to a point where I do not even know how to ask for that. so. i sort of know what the story is about, and i sort of. don't. what am i doing!!!
i will get there. maybe.
meanwhile here, here is Soup, dropped into the spot where he chronologically ought to be in the narrative, and making it all make a lot more sense.
(tl;dr what i am mostly writing is an exploration of ilya's relationship with queerness and russia, and how everyone around him relates to that, and as part of that, one of the guys in the russian groupchat has become personally offended by basically Ilya's entire deal and is making that everyone's problem.)
Soup hadn’t been on the ice for Ilya’s fight with Semyonov. But he’d heard it. Ilya overheard Johannsen, the backup goalie, asking Soup what the fight had been about, and held his breath, listening.
“You know Russian, right?” Johannsen was Swedish, and Swedes knew a lot more about Europe than most North Americans.
“Yeah,” Soup admitted.
“So what were they so mad about?” Johannsen asked. As backup goalie he’d been dressed and watching from his weird segregated seat, so he’d probably watched the whole thing develop.
“I don’t know,” Soup said.
“What were they saying?” Johannsen asked.
“Lot of things,” Soup said. “Mostly just-- bad words. But-- funny thing, Rozanov doesn’t usually swear on ice, he talks like old lady. I know everyone else think he is swearing bad all time, but usually he says really, ah. Funny things in Russian, not swear words. So he maybe said something funny to Semyonov, I don’t know. But Semyonov was just saying nasty things to him, nasty real bad nasty.”
“I never thought they had any particular argument before,” Johannsen said.
“I don’t know,” Soup said.
“There was one thing Semyonov kept repeating,” Johannsen said. “Said it three or four times, really spat it like it was dirty.”
“Yes,” Soup said. “It was dirty.”
Don’t tell him it was faggot, Ilya thought, but could not say. If he interfered…
“It seemed like Semyonov was really angry,” Johannsen said. “Did Rozanov fuck his wife or something?”
“No,” Soup said. “I don’t know. I think it must be Russian drama. They are both old, I don’t know what they do for years. And is whole groupchat with Russians, maybe they fight on their phones, I’m not in it so I don’t know.”
Johannsen didn’t sound satisfied by that, but Marly and Connors came in through the door then in the midst of a shouted conversation, so that was all there was.
Couple questions if you don’t mind (I uh. figured you’d be more accurate than asking Google) /gen
what’s fictionfolk / fictomesia? is the first one like being a fictionkin?
What’re exo/orthotrauma? I’ve never heard of them before.
Have a great timezone :)
Oh, I'll add this to pinned, apologies.
Fictionfolk: those with personal identities related to what in this world is fiction, often rooted in various ways in being a certain character from that fiction as well as concepts, species; or having strong connections to those.
Fictomisia is discrimination against fictionfolk: dismissal and denial of our experiences, attempts to force us into disidentification with our sources, and much more. It is systemic; it is part of the overall enforcement of the hegemonic social norms, and the fact that it is a part of it does not mean it is not its own thing deserving distinct attention and having distinct features.
Exotrauma is trauma from things that did not happen to or in the body that one is inhabiting now. Orthotrauma is that which did; ortho- means traditional and here, also connects to the word orthohuman—traditional experience of being human. Exotrauma is a (relatively) commonly used term, but I have not seen orthotrauma used anywhere before writing it in my pinned.
Also, exomemories—memories from beyond the current body.
Can I submit my OC? She's a vampire and idk how many of the vampires are taken so I figured I'd ask first!
Theirs no vampires currently taken! If I get 21 submission, I’ll do 3 vamps, but yeah you’re oc can be one of the starting vamps! I just need their info. If no one else submits a starting vamp oc I’ll randomly pick some and make it fit into the story.
Need to establish why Archie needs to stay home with his date Betty. And need to retrack on why he needs to take the call.
Pretty closed off in your imagination, aren't you second Archie? If you were Betty, which Archie would you rather go to?
Misplaced his pen? And "baby" is out -- damnedably I say. The story is interesting as a set with a handful of others -- Betty and Archie will have to wait for the next time out to advance somewhere.
Noting the climate of the period in Archie Comics, here is the earlier story in this issue. Veronica schleps off the task of entertaining the daughter of a business associate onto Archie, and after they both get one look at her, Veronica tries to reign in Archie's enthusiasm.
A dash of a double standard in his approach, though I guess you can explain it as Hiram leaving the parenting of Archie to Fred and Mary.
