Wings Spread to the Sun

- HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY LAUREN!!!! I’m sorry this is late and I’m also sorry this is your present because Canada post and I are not friends and your actual present is sitting on my dresser. I hope you have a splendid year! 

Draco Malfoy/ Hermione Granger 

Modern University (ish) AU 

It’s been years since I’ve written fanfiction I’m so sorry. 

Draco Malfoy was not sure how he had managed to get into his current predicament.

Well.

Actually, he had narrowed it down to a few select instances.

Maybe he had ended up here, in this room, in this “absolutely ridiculous” suit and too tight tie, because two years ago he hadn’t had the good sense to turn around and find a seat further away in their lecture hall when his eyes had landed on the back of her bushy head for the first time since graduation.

Maybe he had ended up holding his fourth-“errm, maybe sixth”-drink and standing in a far corner in a room of people he did not know, nor quite frankly cared about because following the aforementioned lack of sense he had met her eyes and returned her hesitant smile. Every week. For an entire semester. Often enough incidentally that when they were told to pair up for a group project, Granger’s eyebrow raise and small smile had provoked a nod that resulted in them being paired together for the duration of the semester.

Maybe it was when he agreed to go for a coffee outside of class time once, twice- “usual spot next week Malfoy?”

If he was being less dramatic about the entire situation he could point to two weeks ago when Hermione Granger had walked into his apartment and thrown two ties and an invitation at him. He had scoffed when he read the delicate cursive that announced the charity event. He had scowled when he saw that the two ties she had passed to him had aquatic creatures sprawled across their surface- “it’s a children’s charity Draco! Show a little spirit!”- and he had laughed outright when she told him that he had no choice but to go with her.

“Granger-“

But then she had taken her jacket off and sat down beside him, throwing her legs over his lap and she was frowning and the little wrinkle between her eyebrows was visible and he could see her bottom lip getting ready to pout and then she had started playing with the straps of her shirt and she was wearing the ridiculous top that was a size too big that had “save the planet” written across it in faded lettering and then she put a hand on his shoulder and titled her head and her hair had fallen to the side and-

Draco Malfoy was wearing a black tie with tiny purple monkeys on it standing in a room full of very loud children who had been given too much candy and whose parents were drinking too much to care because Hermione Granger had been wearing a stupid shirt and her stupid hair had looked stupidly pretty in his stupid apartment.

Speaking of which.

Granger had somehow found tights that matched Draco’s tie and was wandering around the room in a black dress that was quite frankly a personal affront on Draco when he was sober but now that he was nearing the high end of drunk it was worse. She had put some sort of glitter in her hair and tamed the wild mane into a braid that whipped around her whenever she spun to talk to someone new. She was grinning happily and shaking hands and “we’ve raised 78,000!!”

She wandered back over to the corner Draco had named his own and had spent the night in. A smile was plastered on her face and a hand stretched out towards him. He reached up carelessly, grabbing her fingers. She squeezed his hand and leaned her head on his arm.

“I am exhausted” she announced. He turned his head and found his lips very close to the top of her hair. She had her hand still entwined with his and he found that there were small goosebumps working their way up his arm at the contact. He could smell the product she had used on her hair and feel the rub of her silver bangles on his arms as he continued to grip her hand. She was very warm or maybe he was very warm- either way he was growing alarmingly aware of how close they were. And his four- “SIX”- drinks were not helping.

“That’s what you get for being a humanitarian, Granger.”

She squeezed his hand tighter but murmured a heatless “Bite me Malfoy.”

They remained that way, Hermione with her head on Draco’s arm and fingers intertwined for what felt like a century as Draco’s heart beat much too fast for his current inactive state. People buzzed around them- couples calling out joint goodbyes and “truly brilliant night Hermione!” as they walked out phones out informing their babysitters they were returning. The younger members of the crowd left with salutes and winks as they hung to their dates and blew kisses at Hermione who laughed and mock caught them- still plastered to Draco.

He decided it was him who was warm.

She sighed into his arm and his six drinks whispered dangerous suggestions. His hand gripped hers tighter. She removed her head from his arm and stood up on her toes, her words darted across his neck and he was pretty sure this is what it felt like to drown. He could feel the air at the top of the water but was unable to swim high enough to inhale. So he did what any drowning man would do: he inhaled the water.

“Granger” he said cutting off her sentence about how she was going to throw her shoes out the window of the car on their way back because no fashion implement no matter how pretty was meant to cause this much pain.

“Malfoy?” she returned, her words laced with mirth and maybe a bit slow because he was suddenly aware of the smell of champagne on her breath.

“I think I want to kiss you Miss Granger. But we’re both rather intoxicated. And also there appears to be two of you and I think kissing the wrong Granger would be a lot less fun than kissing the right Granger.”

Hermione laughed and brushed her lips across the side of his mouth. “Harry is going to be so upset he just lost his bet with Ron.” And then she kissed him correctly and Draco knew that he wasn’t drowning but probably, maybe, flying.

And he didn’t want to land.

And then she left, taking with her Percivale’s mood, Kay’ssmile and Arthur’s usual demeanor. 

+ Arthurstiffened and felt the eyes of his three friends on him

+ Anna laughed, her knife dancing across her knuckles.“Please”
