Clark’s Wallabee

Maybe you know about them, maybe you don’t. Maybe you already love them or maybe you hate them. Although clarks is not the kind of shoe brand that you usually look for when buying your next pair of trainers, it's undeniable that at least one clarks shoe has found its way out of your grandad's shoe rack. We are talking about Wallabees.

The legacy of this shoe started back in the 60s, when Clarks bought the license to produce a moccasin called the Grasshopper and started to manufacture it in a recently-acquired factory in Ireland.

They licensed the model under the name “Wallabee” and decided to introduce it in North America after the success it had in the UK and Ireland.

Soon, Jamaican people started to use them because of their versatility, as they said, “you could mix them with a suit and give it a casual style, ladies love that.” Jamaican gangs had already been using other Clarks models before, like the desert trek aka “The Bankrobber”.

The introduction of the model Wallabee in North America created a boom and soon, they became a symbol. Rappers like Wu-Tang Clan decided to wear them to make themselves look different from other rappers of the decade. Years later they ended up doing their own version of the shoes.

But they lost their boost during the end of the 90s. Recently, Clarks has pushed to get the attention back and due that, they have collaborated with a lot of streetwear brands and rappers.

One collab that I really like is the one they’ve done with Aimé Leon Dore. The fact I like the most is that they brought Nas as the model. Talking about who brings who to the scene I got surprised when I saw Method Man performing on the last LV fashion show, due to the release of the last men collection.

Another collaboration that I really like, now talking from a design and aesthetic point of view is the one they did recently with Stüssy.

If I had to give my own opinion about them, I'd say in the first place that I'm in love with them, even though they aren't the most comfy shoe you’ll ever wear. But the look they give you when you wear them is amazing, you can wear them with a bunch of different styles and all of them will look great. I'm just looking forward to having a couple more of them on my shoe rack.
