Winchester - (Supernatural / Smallville Crossover AU) - Chapter 21
Living a normal life outside of being a hunter is still a bit hard to grasp.
Luckily Mr. Kent had put in a good word for you, so you’d snag a job at a nearby hardware store and you were doing part time at another diner close by. Dean insisted that if you were in need of cash he could spot you some, but honestly, you wanted to do it on your own.
When you were hunting by yourself, running from your brothers, it didn't feel like anything had changed. That lifestyle was painful, especially on your own. But now you have a little more stability, you’d like to maintain it.
You’ve managed to find a reasonably priced apartment that was actually pretty decent. You’re new found independence feels liberating. Maybe it’s the fact that for once you’re trying to build a home. Something you hadn’t had in years.
As hard as those days were, there were still some more tender memories.
Like when Dean taught you how to drive, or when Sam would arm wrestle with you.
Having your first beer, celebrating your first fourth of July. Dean had to be the father at times, and you knew it was difficult, especially since he was still a kid himself. He was stubborn, so were you. Maybe that’s why you’d butt heads so often.
But you know that regardless, you wouldn’t have it any other way. Smiling to yourself, you drop your bag, pulling out your phone. Typing quickly, you grin. The message is sent and you wait patiently for a reply.
The flapping of wings is the next thing you hear and you jolt.
Dean, Sam, Jack and Castiel are standing in front of you. Dean is holding a six pack of beer and what looks like a banner from his favorite football team.
“Let’s start decorating!”
You can’t help but laugh.
“I texted you like a minute ago, how did you get that so fast?”
“He’s been keeping it in the living room in hopes that you would call. He started hollering like it was a drill the second he got the text.” Sam informs.
“Shut up Sammy!”
Castiel looks as confused as always.
“I don’t understand the need to place items around a living space.”
“I think it’s awesome. What should we do first?” Jack asks, practically bouncing on his heels with that smile on his face. You expect nothing less. All you can do is appreciate all of it.
“I’ve got a bunch of stuff in my room, come on Jack.”
He follows happily, and Dean is already discussing where the banner should go. As you walk into your room, you head for the closet. You’ve been gathering items to make it more homey. Lana was gracious to give you some items she had at the Talon that were no longer being used. Mrs. Kent had even tossed in some extra things she had at her house.
You direct Jack to grab a box, and you pull one that is tucked to the back. You’re looking for a particular medal that you’d gotten from one of the first schools that you had attended when you were younger. It was a cherished memory.
Opening the box, you begin to shuffle through. It’s a few random things you didn’t even realize you still had. You’re positive you put it in there.
Rummaging through, your eyes cast on the old cellphone at the bottom and you pause. Jack tilts his head at your distant expression.
“What’s that?”
His question brings you back, and you just offer a smile, shaking your head as you slide it into your pocket.
“It’s just an old phone. Let’s check over here.”
You close the box, sliding it to the back as you continue your search.
You go about the day as usual.
The minute you step back into the living room, Sam and Dean are wrestling for the remote. Castiel is holding the banner, unsure of where it needs to go.
Both brothers roll off the couch with a thud, and you’re in stitches. Jack places his box down, laughing along with you.
It’s nice, having them all in one place.
Decorating might take a while.

“Boo, your team sucks!!” Dean shouts across the room.
Sam just waves his hand, and Dean grins, getting comfortable as he reaches for another beer.
Now that you’re both seated at the dining table, Dean pops the cap of his beer. Sam is on the couch with Castiel and Jack trying to explain the game of football that’s currently playing on the television.
The ease of it all is more than you could have hoped for. The last thing you ever expected was to have a family again. At least a partially functional one. It’s been a while since you’ve all been in a space like this without some kind of crazy world altering event. The atmosphere is nice, and as you glance at Dean who’s smiling at his friends and family in the background, you swallow, fidgeting with your hands.
“I never apologized.”
Dean turns to you, curious.
“For leaving. I knew how hard it was when Sam left. I saw how much it hurt. Not just you, but dad. Then I did the same thing.”
You reach into your pocket, pulling out the phone. The moment he sees, he must realize. You lower your head, because you know he remembers all the messages and calls he sent when you just disappeared.
“(Y/N), pick up the phone. Are you okay?”
“(Y/N), I’m serious, damn it! Answer your phone!
“Listen, you sure as hell better be dead, otherwise I'm gonna kill you myself!!”
“Please, please just give me a sign that you’re alive. Please (Y/N).”
He lowers his beer, and you can see the slight look of pain. There has been so much uncertainty in your life. So many things that you couldn’t control, that you wanted to run from. As bad as things were, there was one constant in your life, and it was that Dean would always be in your corner.
“I’m sorry Dean. For everything.”
You can’t truly look at him, you can’t hope to gauge what kind of expression he’s wearing. With a laugh, you just shake your head.
“I forgot, you hate chick flick moments.”
You stand, sliding your chair in and Dean does the same. You think he’s about to follow you over to join the boys, but he steps forward and pulls you right into his chest. Your hands are lifted a bit awkwardly from the sudden hug, and Sam looks over, smiling.
“I love you (Y/N). Don’t you ever forget that.”
Your eyes well up, and you reach over, hugging him back happily.
“I love you too Dean, so much.”
Your words are a bit muffled against his clothing, but you know he hears. He runs a hand down behind your head comfortingly.
“Hey!! You guys threw a party and didn’t invite me!!”
The familiar call of Gabriel breaks your focus and you pull away, wiping your eyes.
“I told Dean to text you, I thought you were just busy.”
Dean just looks off to the side.
“Wow, that’s low.” Gabriel comments.
It’s obvious Dean had in fact not texted him.
“Don't think I forgot that nutcracker situation!! I could have lost my jewels!!” Dean complains.
“At least you didn’t actually get hit.” Sam grimaces.
“I think I was doing the world a favor. Not sure the world needs more moose.”
Sam glares and pretty soon your calm evening has turned into a mini brawl. You’re laughing when Sam begins chasing Gabriel.
“My angel blade is in my jacket pocket!!” Dean calls.
Yes, you certainly love this family.
