This afternoon my grade for the class I started this blog for was sent to me via text message.

I got a high distinction!

For those of you from places that use different grading systems, that is the highest grade available.

The way this class was graded, this blog was worth 60% of my mark, and I achieved a numerical score of 96 out of 100 for it.

map mashup

The class requirement for this week and last is to make a map-based mashup. A mashup is when you combine data, presentation, and functionality from two or more sources to make something new. It is used for aggregating and visualizing information in ways that make the data more useful, personal, and professional.

Mashups include things like mixing one or more song together, like this, or this. It also includes things such as YooouuuTuuube, which plays back youtube videos from a supplied link but displays the video in interesting ways, like this, or this.

The map-based mashup I'm going to do will be sourced mostly from Flickr and will be of feminist street art. I'm hoping I'll have enough Australian-based photos to base my map in Australia-only, but if not it'll be global.

This was a class requirement from last week, but I'm running a bit late since it was really difficult to pick anything interesting that trends for this subject, so I've just gone with a couple of key issues.

I really couldn't tell you what's up with the trends here, and the news articles referenced when searched on the Google Trends main page don't much help. It is really interesting though. I wasn't expecting such a low scale for sexism. I love the decreasing spikes towards the end of the years for disability. Absolutely no idea what causes it though.

What kind of ways can you imagine collective intelligence could be applied to your blog topic of interest? Could your site benefit from collective intelligence? What sort of content could people put there ? Are there any current or competing sites ? How would your site attract user-led content?

Collective intelligence is already applied in my blog topic of interest, although less so on my particular blog. Many of the bigger and more well-renowned feminist sites are run on user-led content, either through encouraged and in-depth comment discussion (a huge part of Shakesville), and-or open posting and contributing (such as Feministing where all you need is to register for a free account to contribute).

I'm not too sure that this particular blog would really benefit too much from collective intelligence beyond the collective intelligence of other similar-minded tumblr users, who I already make use of through discussion and rebloging. If I were to use it, the type of content people could contribute could be things like relevant local news stories or personal experiences. I'm not sure how I'd attract user-led content though. Contributing to other sites and dropping a link to my own at the bottom, I suppose.
