I’ve watched “Carousel” and on the one hand, I fairly enjoyed it: the music was very good, I was able to follow the plot (unlike “Oklahoma!”), I liked the dance scenes very much – I’ve seen such wonderful choreography probably only in “West Side Story” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” – I was especially amazed by “June Is Bustin' Out All Over” and “Louise's Ballet”; on the other hand, sometimes it was weird and somehow seems to excuse home violence – at first, when (I guess spoilers) Billy hit Julie everybody (except herself) was blaming him and saying him that it’s wrong but at the end when he, dead returned to Earth to see his family, hit his daughter and she later told her mother that it didn’t hurt at all and felt like a kiss and Julie visibly remembering how her husband hit her tells her daughter that it’s possible to be so when somebody hits you but it doesn’t hurt at all. A very strange message, I suppose that we should make a discount for the time of making the movie, but not ignore it. (After all, it’s much better than in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” where kidnapping was excused.)
