Once a prodigious student attending the University of California Los Angeles School of Law, Lori Carpenter, full name Lauren Arielle Carpenter, is the sole survivor of the Carpenter Family Reunion Massacre that had involved three vengeful spirits emerging and brutally murdering her entire family. These spirits would perpetually haunt Lori for the sins of her family. This sudden horrific loss would tap Lori magically with a unique affinity that enhances her awareness and pre-cognitive senses as well as provides her with sporadic glimpses into the future while dreaming. Lori would easily avoid the three spirits with her abilities, even to the point of being able to exploit and manipulate their respective paths of destruction. She, however, is incapable of making contact with people due to the ever-present danger from her spirits indiscriminately murdering anyone in their own ways, since her powers work to protect herself and not others, thus forcing her into seclusion. Lori, despite displacing herself far from any major city in a trailer in the middle of the Navajo Desert, would be approached by representatives from the American Government and the Aria of Holy Knights, a Vatican-backed collective of inter-faith battle chaplains, who have documented her circumstance and are impressed by her affinities. They would bargain to help to remove the curse in exchange for her abilities to be used to combat a variety of malevolent forces, fighting fire-with-fire. The three murderous spirits that haunt Lori are the weeping apparition, La Llorona, the cryptic undead killer of legend, Zodiak, and the mischievous doll imp, Muñeka. All three spirits have been personally wounded and afflicted by litigious members of the Carpenter Family, enough so that the three made a Death Pact where their carnage would not stop until the last Carpenter was dead.
