A Brief Overview -

In this world, being a little, caregiver, or flip (or any sub-category) is a biological imperative (for some, at least). Littles need to be little, caregivers need to take care of people, etc. In this world, there are roughly six types of classes one can fall into:

Little - this is one of the self-explanatory/standard ones. People in this category need to regress to a younger age (0-17) mentally, at varying levels of frequency. (Exact age can also vary.) They do not regress physically, although they may have some physical signs of regression, such as temporary incontinence or clumsiness. Generally, this classification needs to be cared for, although some may be generally self-sufficient, especially the older ones. However, they lack any natural caregiving instincts, and thus are generally not put in charge of other littles even if they're bigger. Experience little-drop and involuntary regression if they repress their regression, are put under extreme stress, or are not taken care of while regressed.

Big Sib - a Little with natural caregiving instincts/abilities. Usually regress to older ages, like younger teens. They are able to care for other, younger littles, and are generally self-sufficient, at least most of the time. If their little side is not being supported too, however (age-appropriate tasks only!) they will often break and not be able to care for themselves, let alone others. At least, if they are left like that for long enough. Experience both little-drop and care-drop (though little-drop is more severe).

Flip - the exact middle ground, both Little and Caretaker. May have some lean towards one or the other, but not enough to get classed as either Big Sib or Babysitter. Can function in either role, need an equal amount of both. May need both quite a lot, or both very little. Can experience both little-drop and care-drop.

Babysitter - Caregivers with a Little streak. Have less natural instincts than a full Caregiver and generally do not have full-time littles. (Unless they're a live-in nanny type.) Generally regress to older ages like older teens, and/or regress extremely infrequently. Their Caretaker instincts may not be as strong, but are never fully off, either. Experience both little-drop and care-drop, but care-drop is more severe.

Caregiver - another standard classification. Do not regress. Have natural caregiving instincts that allow them to sense Littles around them, if the Littles are regressed, and what they need. Need to take care of others, are almost always the ones put in charge of Littles due to their instincts. Will experience care-drop if they do not take care of someone for long enough, are under extreme stress, or are around distressed Littles without being able to help.

Neutral - this is just normal humans. Like us, they may regress or dream, or be good caretakers, but it is not a biological imperative. The average person, also generally the most common (but in the sense that while Littles, Caretakers etc make up a small percentage of the population, they are still incredibly common and accepted because that's still a lot of people).

People are tested for their classification at age sixteen, since that's when signs are generally obvious, and to help Littles who cannot take care of themselves prepare for the future and adulthood. (Littles who cannot be on their own, which is most, get government assistance if they do not have a caretaker.) This is done via a mix of personality inventories, projective tests, and genetic testing. Test administrators will also check family data for common dynamics that have a likelier chance of occuring.

As for our setting:

Heroes can be of any classification; however, it is generally advised not to have a team made up of only one class. Without a healthy balance, at least some members will go without something they need. A team is supposed to trust each other and spend a good amount of time together, so it's important to make sure the dynamic benefits everyone. The JLA is a very well known example of a team that has a very good balance. (Although some members do hide their classifications from the public, there's an anonymous schematic that shows what percentage of the team is which.)

Wayne Enterprises is one of the most well-known companies in general, but especially for Littles. Not only does WE run a free daycare and care home for Littles who need it (as well as a matchmaking/'adoption' program), they also treat every dynamic fairly in employment. Caretakers and Littles get as much time off as they need as well as a paycheck that covers anything the government assistance won't. There are special rooms in every building. They can go to the on-site daycare (either as charges or workers) and still get paid. Bruce Wayne has so much fucking money and he's not even really losing any because everyone loves him and WE products are always high quality and affordable so everyone keeps buying his shit. (The only reason he's not operating at a loss is bc Gotham means everyone still has to replace their stuff.)

Speaking of Bruce, he's publicly known as the World's Biggest Caregiver. (This is false, but no one needs to know that. The real biggest caregiver is Alfred.) Everyone knows he keeps taking in kids and Littles alike, through fostering or official adoption. Batman is also known to be a caregiver to the general public, however a few (including a surprising amount of rogues) swear up and down that they've seen him regressed. Some, when asked, will only wink and put a finger to their lips, and refuse to answer either way.

Littles, Caregivers etc also have varying sub-categories. These will be under the cut.

All classifications have three categories of subtypes: age range, needs level, and temperament. There are two versions of each category, one for regression and one for caretaking. Every individual receives a class in each category along with their general classification.

Regression

For regression, age range specifies the age(s) an individual regresses to. Of course, skills listed here depend on the individual being able to do them while not regressed. And sometimes a person will be able to perform tasks that their range usually can't. While a person may regress through a larger range or between ranges, these are the classes usually given:

Infant (0-1) - infant regressors require near-constant care while regressed. Often, they will not talk, simply babble. They cannot be left alone for long while awake, and their space will need to be baby-proofed. They cannot feed themselves, experience extreme levels of clumsiness especially while attempting older activities (like walking), and often experience incontinence.

Toddler (1-3) - toddler regressors are much more mobile than infant regressors. They still experience clumsiness, but can somewhat walk and feed themselves though they will make a mess. Baby proofing is even more important as sense of danger is limited. Need supervision, although they are slightly more self-sufficient they still cannot be left alone for long. Most experience incontinence, but as a smaller frequency; potty training can be done.

Preschooler (3-5) - preschooler regressors need much less supervision, as long as they are in a safe area. Sense of danger is extremely dampened by curiosity, so will need a close eye in spaces where there are potential dangers. Some experience incontinence, but potty training is much easier with this range.

Kid (6-9) - kid regressors do not need nearly as much supervision, although they still may do risky things. Most retain potty training, but may still have accidents on occasion. Able to do things safely from a farther distance from caretakers, allowing for them to run off at the park and play outside with minimal supervision. Towards the later ages they can start helping with chores, and depending on temperament may enjoy doing so.

Preteen (10-12) - at this point, if the person has caretaker instincts, they can generally be trusted to take care of other littles without supervision. Mostly self-sufficient, though they cannot be left to take care of themselves on their own. Can be left alone for a few hours, dress themselves, and perform basic household chores. Able to cook simple things and use the stove, and cook more elaborate meals with assistance. Can go to nearby parks and restaurants with friends or by themselves, more aware of their surroundings and potential dangers. Can play outside without supervision.

Middle Schooler (13-14) - middle schooler regressors need very little supervision, though they still need to be accompanied by a caregiver if they're going somewhere further away. Can be left alone overnight, can cook and dress themselves, though they probably will still prefer to be cooked for. Can go farther away from home, and get themselves to and from clubs and the like. Cannot hold proper jobs, but may enjoy helping with smaller tasks at their job and doing chores.

Highschooler (15-17) - highschooler regressors are found most commonly in Big Sibs and Babysitters. They are capable of getting themselves places, doing proper jobs, going farther away from home without a caregiver. They usually cannot manage a house on their own, but can do much more adult tasks like cooking more often and doing deeper cleaning. They are capable of taking care of themselves and can be left alone for much longer periods of time. (Days/weeks.)

The second category is, of course, needs level. This is the category that tells you what kind of support a little needs. Such as frequency with regression, caretaking, and susceptibility to drop. There are three needs levels.

Level 1 - level 1 regressors require the least amount of support for their age group. They often can go weeks without regressing, and do not need as much help from a caretaker. Their periods of regression may be shorter as well, some lasting only a few hours. While all regressors are at some risk for little-drop, level 1 regressors experience it infrequently and with low intensity. Often, they do not experience little-drop even when exposed to a trigger.

Level 2 - level 2 regressors require moderate/average support for their age group. This makes up the majority of regressors. They can go for a week or two without regressing, though most prefer to regress at least once every week or so. Their regression often lasts for a day or so, and they need appropriate support from caregivers. They experience little-drop relatively infrequently, though more than level 1 regressors, and generally not without a trigger.

Level 3 - level 3 regressors are the rarest type of regressors. While their mental state suggests one age, they often struggle with the tasks for that age. They need to be regressed every couple of days to near daily, and their regression often lasts a couple days to weeks. They need lots of help from caregivers, even with tasks their age range should be able to do. Many experience incontinence. They are generally more emotionally fragile and extremely prone to little-drop. While people originally thought level 3 regressors were simply misclassified in their age range, they actually are not - they understand the world and view it just as someone in their age range would. They simply struggle on physical tasks and emotional processing.

And the third category is temperament. This category has much fuzzier boundaries, as it is mainly a reading of an individual's personality while regressed. Thus, there are nearly infinite possibilities. However, here are some common ones:

Quiet - quiet regressors are often the ones that stick closest to their caretakers. They prefer quiet activities, dislike toys with loud sounds or bright lights, and prefer to stay inside than play at the park. They are often shy around other regressors and prefer to stay with their caretaker. They often enjoy helping their caretaker or mirroring things their caretaker does. They may enjoy helping their caretaker around the house.

Mischievous - mischievous regressors are the ones most likely to push boundaries. They may not be the most energetic, but they're always up to something. They like playing games like tag and hide and seek, and board games like Sorry!. They're the ones trying to sneak out of bed during naptime or trying to get extra sugar without their caretaker's permission. They want an explanation to everything, to know why every rule is in place. If they don't have an explanation or disagree with it, they simply won't follow it.

Adventurous - adventurous regressors are the extroverted, energetic ones; the natural leaders. They often enjoy elaborate pretend games with super powers or magic. They may pretend to be a knight sent to slay a dragon, or a superhero fighting a villain. They also enjoy video games and competitive games. They don't break rules on purpose, but may forget they're not supposed to do something.

Protective - protective regressors are the ones most likely to be big sibs or babysitters. They often play games such as house, or play pretend with baby dolls and stuffed animals. Older ones will volunteer to watch younger ones, wanting someone to have an eye on them at all times. They may be more anxious and, like quiet regressors, stay near their caregiver a lot to make sure everything is okay.

Caregiving

When it comes to caretaking, age range instead refers to the range a caretaker is best at caring for. Caretakers are classed by how they interact with different ages and what feels most natural. There are, of course, exceptions, especially when it comes to needs levels, but this is the general classes.

Infant - infant caregivers are the ones who have a lot of time on their hands. They are extremely patient and understanding, and are willing to sacrifice a lot for a Little. They tend to be calm and relaxed but always on alert. They are the most attuned caregivers, since their littles often cannot express needs via speech or writing.

Toddler - toddler caregivers, much like infant caregivers, are naturally very patient and tolerant. They require the ability to be on alert and pay attention to every little thing, since their Littles are mobile. Generally, toddler caregivers are the most lenient - infant caregivers don't need to deal with much in the way of their Littles getting into things. Toddler caregivers need to be able to understand that their Little does not understand what they did wrong or why it had consequences.

Preschooler - preschooler caregivers are much more lenient, at least while inside the house, but often more protective when outside. They allow their littles plenty of alone playtime and playdates as well as playtime with them, but when outside they are always on alert. Inside, they let their little roam, but outside, they constantly have a hand on their Little. A mix of protective and permissive.

Kid - kid caregivers are more permissive, but a bit stricter. They enforce rules with logical consequences, and are more strict with discipline. However, with the rules come increased privileges, and they allow their Littles more freedom and distance. They always keep an eye out, of course, but they let their Littles move farther away. They are less anxious about what their Little might get into.

Preteen - preteen caregivers are collaborative, while still keeping a firm hand. They like to let their Littles feel like they're leading, while actually being the one in control to make sure everything goes right. They deliberately let their Little feel more independent, while making sure no huge mistakes are made and nothing gets too damaged.

Middle Schooler - middle schooler caregivers are generally laid-back and trusting of their Littles. They know their Littles can handle themselves for a bit and are aware of dangers. These caregivers focus on the bond between Little and Caregiver, trusting the Little to mostly handle themselves. Instead, they focus on bonding with the Little and waiting for the Little to ask for help with things, allowing them to feel more control and agency.

Highschooler - highschooler caregivers are a mix of lenient and strict, to make sure their Little is well taken care of. Older Littles are usually more resistant to constant care, so highschooler caretakers have to be okay with letting their Little be alone and make decisions. At the same time, they have to be able to enforce rules and standards, without their Little feeling like they're being treated unfairly.

Of course, this standard can be impacted by needs levels. Just like littles, caregivers have three needs levels. In this case, they refer to how often a caregiver needs to care for someone, the intensity of their caregiving, and how susceptible they are to care-drop.

Level 1 - level 1 caregivers need to take care of others only a few times a month, outside of being directly around a Little in need. They are more distant in caretaking than level 2 caregivers, and often do not directly need a Little. They may simply care for houseplants or pets instead. While they can experience care-drop, they may not be affected by the common triggers, and come out of it easier.

Level 2 - level 2 caregivers are the standard. They need to take care of someone at least every couple weeks, preferring at least once a week. While pets and houseplants may work for them if they don't have a Little, it's not as fulfilling and will take more work to satisfy the urge. They fit the standard intensity for caregiving relative to their age range, and are generally warm to any Little regardless. When confronted by a Little in immediate need, they'll drop everything to help.

Level 3 - level 3 caregivers are rare, though not as rare as level 3 regressors. When not paired with a level 3 regressor, they are often paired with infant regressors and those who are perma-regressed. They are intense and overbearing in their caregiving, regardless of the age range of their Little. They need to take care of someone once every few days at least, and the urge cannot be filled by pets or plants. They are extremely susceptible to care-drop, becoming extremely stressed and irritable without a Little to care for. They get extremely anxious over the safety of any Little near them.

And, much like littles, caregivers have different personalities and temperaments even within their age range and level. Here are a few common ones:

Parent - parent caregivers are the most known type. Though there are differences between mommy and daddy types, among others, this category encompasses the similarities between all of them. These types most enjoy being full-time exclusive caregivers to a smaller amount of Littles. They enjoying bonding activities and caregiver/little specific events. They focus mostly on the long-term safety and happiness of their Littles, as well as their bond.

Teacher - teacher caregivers are the ones you usually find working at Little daycares. They prefer being part-time caregivers to larger amounts of littles, and enjoy group activities and bonding. They prefer activities where the Littles learn something from it, even if technically the Littles already know. Math games, kahoots, and interactive books and the like are a go-to, depending on exactly what the caregiver wants to teach.

Aunt/Uncle - aunt and uncle caregivers usually aren't primary caregivers, but that doesn't mean they love their Littles any less. They tend to come around to play with the Little and give the Little's main caregiver a break. They love bonding activities, taking the Little out for novel experiences, and spoiling the Little rotten before bringing them home for the main caregiver to take over again.

Perma-regression, mentioned above, is rare but far from unheard of. It's usually the result of trauma, neurodivergency, or disability - however, sometimes it just happens, especially with those with higher needs levels. Sometimes, a person might make the conscious choice to regress permanently, for a variety of reasons including simple personal want. Perma-regressors are usually not in the age range to hold jobs, and are either taken care of by family, caretakers, or through government assistance. (There are also some private institutions, like WE Paradise Playhouse, a 24/7 care home for littles that need caretakers. They also run an 'adoption' program where they help find caretakers that match a little's needs.)
