miraclefeet is a Classy Awards Finalist

We have some exciting news to share. Our program, Global Clubfoot Technology Platform, has been named a Classy Awards Finalist, of the 100 most innovative nonprofits and social enterprises of 2016! We couldn’t be more excited to share the news with supporters like you that make our work possible.

Classy Awards Finalists are a prestigious group of nonprofits and social enterprises selected for their excellence in social innovation and ability to solve a social problem. This year, Classy had 1300 programs across all cause categories submit nominations, and the competition was at an all-time high. The application process was rigorous and intensive, and we were judged using stringent criteria that assesses an organization's potential to solve a problem and innovative solution.

Our program, along with the 99 other Finalists, is now in the running to become a winner. Our fate is being passed on to the Leadership Council, a diverse board of experts and thought leaders who will collectively vote to determine the 10 Classy Award Winners.  

The Global Clubfoot Technology Platform builds upon our Global Clubfoot Program (sustainable partnerships with local clubfoot providers). The technology platform will accelerate the rollout of clubfoot treatment in low income settings, enabling us, other NGOs, and governments to eradicate one the disability caused by clubfoot. We are developing a core platform that enhances patient support and treatment quality through SMS communication/mHealth, e-learning, telemedicine, a low cost brace with sensors, and a mobile native clubfoot data management system. We continue towards our goal to develop tools that can be used by any organization working on the issue of clubfoot, thereby enhancing global capacity to solve untreated clubfoot globally.

So what’s next? Becoming a Classy Awards Finalist means we’ll be traveling to Boston this June 14-16 for the Collaborative + Classy Awards, the largest social innovation event of the year! We’ll have the opportunity to meet and mingle with some amazing folks, like leaders from the United Nations Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Echoing Green, charity:water, and many more. The event ends with the Classy Awards, where the 10 Winners are announced live on stage in a surprise celebration.

the grand slam of impact

American Pharoah embodied greatness by ending a 37-year drought in winning horseracing’s Triple Crown earlier this summer.

Serena Williams awed us when she won the Serena Slam by rallying through to her Wimbledon victory, and will go into the US Open as the heavy favorite to complete the first tennis Grand Slam since 1988.

Jordan Spieth is currently in Scotland to compete at The Open, trying to capture his third major of the year and have just one step left to become golf’s first-ever Grand Slam winner.

I love each of these story lines more than the next, but it got me thinking: We need a Grand Slam in the social sector.

The CLASSY Awards (USA), the Third Sector Awards (UK), and the HESTA Community Sector Awards (Australia) are a good place to start, but we still have a long way to go.

We need to substantially raise the profile of these types of awards. What the Oscars represent in the movie industry and what the James Beard Awards represent in the culinary world—we need that level of gravitas. To get there, we need to increase awareness, take the awards and winners seriously, and double (or quintuple) down on marketing. Don’t think that’s possible in the social sector? Ever heard of a little award from Norway called the Nobel Peace Prize? (Maybe that should be the fourth leg of our Grand Slam of Impact...) 

If you’re thinking that social impact shouldn’t be competitive, you’re partially right. But, you’re also super, super wrong. One of the biggest hurdles to true social change is raising awareness, which is exactly where these types of awards and competitions excel.  In 15 years, people will still know American Pharoah, Serena Williams, and—if he can pull off two more big wins—Jordan Spieth because they will have the hardware to back up the claims of their greatness.

Such an amazing and humbling (and terrifying) experience speaking in front of so many nonprofit leaders in the room.  The energy there was unmatchable.

Week of weeks!

And I can assure you there was nothing "weak" about our week. 

Last week was a wild one for the 1:1 team. It was our first week back in schools. San Diego Global Vision Academy (SDGVA) first where we spoke with second, third and fourth graders. Granite Hills High School was next where we heard from eleventh and twelfth graders. Last, but definitely not least, we had a last minute visit with seventh graders at Innovations Academy. 185 students within three days! We send out 185+ high fives to each student who participated in our presentation. A double high five to the teachers who invited us into their classrooms to jumpstart a conversation on conservation! We heard some fantastic ideas and are looking forward to following up with each of these schools as they focus on upcoming endeavors for their schools and classrooms. Go green school plans, after-school 1:1 club, zero-waste lunch project just to name a few... 

The work week didn't end on Friday at 5pm. It did include a quick venture to Blind Lady Ale House for Park(ing) Day 2012. Check out some of their pictures from the event!

Saturday evening, our 1:1 team cleaned up for the 4th Annual Classy Awards. 1:1 was a regional nominee for the Environmental Protection Classy Award. Though this year was not our year, we did join with hundreds of others to attend the nation's largest nonprofit awards ceremony. Sixteen organizations were awarded this year and it was an evening full of inspiration. Good to be surrounded by doers- we may not-for-profit, but we are full of purpose. Stay classy, San Diego and beyond.

Running on that energy, Sunday morning came early! 1:1 packed our vehicle with tabling supplies and vinyl rolls to help with Encinitas Oktoberfest. With many weeks of planning, the 17th Annual Enicinitas Oktoberfest was a blast! We assisted in diverting recyclables from the landfill. The final pound count is TBA. Keep staying Classy, San Diego

While we didn't make it to the next round for the CLASSY Awards, we're still grateful to have been associated with so many awesome organizations fighting the good fight.  We're continuing our bump n grind mentality, working from the bottom up, top down to keep San Diego America's Finest City. 

We're gearing up to host our first Sustainability Symposium offered to educators within the San Diego area. This will be a free conference that introduces 1:1 as an organization, the presentation we give to students, a hands-on lesson plan to emulate within classrooms at low (to no) cost, as well as a Q&A panel. Fingers crossed

At midnight last night, Stay Classy collected votes for Regional Winners. 1:1 is up against some tough competition in the West region. To be honest, we're flattered to be associated with other organizations doing such great work in our region. Our fate of moving onto the National round is now in the hands of the Stay Classy panel and past winners. We can't thank you enough for your continued support!! National winners will be announced on July 31. Whew, 5 days of anticipation!
