when she spoke the words, all will could do was shrug his shoulders in agreement. he was very tired, and he didn’t show any signs of being well-rested in the future. it didn’t help that they were at the lake rather late at night when, of course, it’d be better for him to be at home, sleeping. “i’ll live.” he mumbled, playing a few more chords on his guitar as he looked out at the water. 

“Just stay with me.”

“i can’t...” will spoke, the heartache in his voice evident. “cleo, i can’t be who you want me to be.” they’d both changed a lot since they’d broken up, and while they’d grown closer since she came back to wilson, it was in a different sense. they couldn’t jump back into their old relationship, and frankly, william didn’t want to. he wanted someone else now, and despite the fact that cleo would always be his first love, he couldn’t change how he felt. “please don’t do this to us.” he breathed. “don’t make this go away.”

“I can’t do this.”

“and you shouldn’t have to.” will spoke. “i’m sorry that i’m not what you expected when you came back.” he sighed. he truly was. he wanted to feel that way about cleo, he really did. it would make things so much easier, and he knew he could be happy, just like they’d been in high school. “if you need to take some time...” will drifted off, unable to look her in the eye. he wished he could be more for her. “i understand.”
