rock music didn't die - it was murdered
9/11 happens and Clear Channel (now iHeartRadio) puts out an unofficial ban list of 165 songs that should not be played on the radio. the list OVERWHELMINGLY features rock songs
the Great Recession and currently housing market in the US have lead to less houses being rented, leads to less garages for teenagers to practice
the old way of doing music was hard enough for bands to make a living and this new way of 360 deals and needing an online following to get signed isn't doing bands any favors
because of the predatory music models and the fact that a lot of rock artists are anti-establishment, rock is still alive and well in the local and underground scenes -- it just isn't as mainstream bc they are refusing to sell those types of Big Music deals
Big Music is pushing what it wants to sell and it does not want to sell the type of music that encourages thoughts of rebellion
