Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens ‘Freckles’ (Evergreen Winter Clematis) today’s gorgeous #oneadayplant . One of the first plants I remember learning about at university and always something that I appreciate when I see it, this charming climber is worth the investment in time to get a great plant. . It is fully hardy, but really does so much better in a very sheltered and warm site. A south or South-westerly facing wall is perfect. There, the extra radiated warmth, will ripen growth to allow good development of flowers in October-January/Feb/March depending on weather. . Pendant flowers of creamy-white hang from the wiry stems which also hold the filigree, evergreen leaves. Other forms of C. cirrhosa have either broader, or much finer foliage. . Freckles, as you may have guessed, is more prominently marked with Ruby-red blotches on the inside of each flower than other forms. Slightly scented. To be fair on a really warm day, I have noticed it well. On dull or damp days not at all. . A great plant for pollinators for late/early pollen. Bees and Butterflies that either haven’t hibernated or have woken early benefit. . Pruning needs to be thought through as the wood needs to ripen during the growing season in order to produce flowers. Technically, for those in the know, Pruning Group 1. This means that they don’t require any pruning, but should you wish to, then prune directly after flowering (I.e. spring) ideally after the risk of frosts has passed. . Bake in the sun, fertile soil with reasonable moisture, but not wet ground. Sit back and wait for greatness! .
