4 year old Girl who vanished from Australian campsite found alive in locked house close to home
Cleo Smith disappeared in the early hours of October 16th 2021 from the family's tent at a campsite near the Blowholes, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of the home in Carnarvon, Australia. They'd arrived the night before on their first camping trip as a family of four. Around 8 p.m. Cleo settled in for the night in a sleeping bag, lying just feet away from her mother, stepfather and baby sister, police said. Smith said Cleo had woken at 1:30 a.m. and asked her for a drink of water before going back to sleep. When Smith woke again at 6 a.m., Cleo was gone. As police swarmed to the scene, helicopters and drones scanned the rugged landscape near the campsite, a short walk from the coast where waves smash up against the cliffs. Justin Borg, from Coral Coast Helicopter Services, deployed a team to scan the area -- they ended up searching for three days. He described the sandy hills as slow-moving terrain, the type of ground that made walking slow and difficult: "It's soft sand and prickly underfoot," he said. "When we hadn't found her by the first hour or two, then we were automatically thinking that she's been taken," Borg added. Cleo's sleeping bag was also missing and the zip on the tent was at such a height that police surmised she had been abducted. Smith and her partner, Jake Gliddon, made public appeals for help to find their child.
Her disappearance triggered a massive police search that initially covered several square kilometers around the site and later extended nationwide as alerts were issued for sightings of the girl.
Just after midnight Wednesday, police in Western Australia broke down the door of a locked home in the small town of Carnarvon, ending an extensive 18-day search for a missing 4-year-old girl. A police video caught the moment an officer picked up the child and asked her, "What's your name? The girl replied, "My name is Cleo," according to police.
A 36-year-old local man with "no family connection" is in police custody, WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told ABC Radio Perth. He was not in the house at the time of the raid, Blanch said, and is currently being questioned. Police don't suspect anyone else of being involved, they said.
Cleo after being found
not to be sappy on main, but i did get a lil emotional yesterday finding out cleo smith was found alive and well. statistics tell us this is an entirely rare thing and i can tell you the whole country is relieved.
Police say four-year-old recovered after they broke into a house about 1am and a man is in custody
I’m surprised and relieved that she was found alive! I’ve actually been trying to avoid thinking about/following this case because it seemed so likely to end in a tragic discovery - or of course no discovery at all and no closure. I hope she’ll be able to make a good recovery from whatever went on in those two weeks - and all the people who accused her parents of lying can get stuffed.
Obligatory note that abductions of white children tend to get more publicity and general concern than of indigenous and POC children
The state of Western Australia is offering a A$1 million ($748,100) reward for information about the disappearance of a four-year old girl missing for five days. Cleo Smith was last seen in her family's tent at about 1.30 am local time on Saturday (October 16) at the remote Blowholes Shacks campsite in Macleod, about 900 km (560 miles) north of Perth. When her parents woke at 6.30 a.m. she was gone, police said. Local media reported that the family had been visiting for a weekend camping trip but were staying in the remote area. Western Australian Police said they believe she was abducted from her tent and hold grave fears for her safety. More than 100 police, defence force and state emergency service personnel have joined the searches by air, sea and land for the girl, scouring through the rugged area of the Western Australian coastline.

To my Australien Followers: Please reblog and spread on your social meadia. Hopefully she’s still alive and will be found.
I’m glad Cleo is alive. I’m glad they found her. Of course I am.
But I can’t help but think. Would the police have leapt into action just an hour after the report for a girl of colour? for an aboriginal girl?
Would hey have offered a $1 million incentive for information to find her, if she wasn’t a blue-eyed white girl?
Would they have ever found her at all?
Completely breaking away from the usual content to share such happy news!
Little Cleo Smith has been found alive and well! Oh the tears - they are falling! What a relief for this little darling!
I must admit it has been a tricky couple of days at work, surrounded by four year olds just like her, realising just how little she is and how frightening it was that she was missing for so long. They are so small and vulnerable and they should never be separated from their families in such a way.
Well done, Western Australian Police! Welcome home, baby girl. xoxo
Some Cleo drawings No reason, just felt like it.
