Painting a self-portrait can be a daunting prospect for even the most experienced artist but with a few tricks up your sleeve it can be a lot easier than you might think.

Join local artist Cynthia Dix for a special Simple Selfie-portrait workshop that will give you a whole new way of looking yourself and creating a painting that is uniquely you. Discover your inner Rembrandt without the struggle or pain. It’s all a bit of fun.

You can bring your own painting materials; paints, a canvas, or board or two…or just bring yourself and use ours.

And you’ll go home with a painting of yourself to enter in the Collie Art Gallery’s inaugural Selfies Competition, hang on your wall or… hide behind the door.

The word “selfie” may have only recently made it into dictionaries, but our obsession with how we present ourselves is certainly not a new concept.

The gallery is celebrating the self-image with its first open combined art and photographic competition, Selfies.

Artists and photographers are invited to participate in the exhibition by taking a selfie or producing a self-portrait in any two dimensional medium with a total prize pool of $1500 sponsored by Collie River Valley Marketing.

Click a selfie that shows your place in the Collie landscape, at the skate park, the Bibbulmun Track, somewhere around your school, down by the river or wherever you feel most yourself in and around Collie.   Entries will be judged and finalist chosen to be exhibited at the gallery.

Flick some paint on your palette, pick up your pencils, pastels or pens, and get working on your self-portrait. Abstract or realist, canvas or paper, drawing, print or paint – any combination – it’s up to you. Take a photo of your artwork and email it to the gallery.  Entries will be judged and finalists chosen to be part of the Selfies exhibition.  Finalists will be notified by email and advised to bring their artwork to the gallery on Friday, 12 October, to hang for the exhibition. Finished works must be no larger than 100cm x 100cm, and must be ready to hang with D-rings.

Selfies and self-portraits must be uploaded to Facebook and tagged with #clickcollieselfie.

Total prize pool $1500. Closing date for online entries 25 September 2015.
