THURSDAY 19 DECEMBER The Rex North Column in the Daily Mirror reported that the most popular Christmas carol in classrooms and schools was, ‘We four Beatles of Liverpool are/Paul on a bike and John in a car/George on a scooter, blowing his hooter/Following Ringo Starr,’ sung to the tune of ‘We Three Kings Of Orient Are’. <…> The Beatles were the hottest thing, and of course Brian used to play the Beatles off against anyone in his stable. ‘If you want the Beatles, you will have to take Cliff Bennett or Billy J. Kramer or Cilla Black,’ or whatever. He could play the eld. Everyone wanted the Beatles, so they had to take whoever else he said, so we did a lot of radio and TV because of that. The first stage show we did with them was one of Brian’s Sunday concerts at the Prince of Wales. In fact, we played there quite a few times. In 1966, we were one of the Beatles’ support acts on their tour of Germany. We were in Essen, at a big sports stadium, and the boys came in, John and Paul, and they said, ‘We’ve written a song with you in mind,’ and Paul just went ‘La la la la.’ Later, Brian said, ‘Did the boys play that song to you?’ and when we got back we had a two-week tour before going into Abbey Road and recording ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’, just before the boys brought their own version out on ‘Revolver’. We cut a couple more singles, then changed the name of the group to the Cliff Bennett Band and cut a version of ‘Back In The U.S.S.R.’, as an afterthought really. That group soon split and I formed Toe Fat with two of the Rebel Rousers, who went on to become Chas and Dave. I then quit the music business and went into shipping, but in the past few years I’ve been back on the road, touring on these oldies packages. CLIFF BENNETT, SINGER, GLASTONBURY, SOMERSET
