Dr. Cliff Huxtable is a successful New York obstetrician and jazz enthusiast, characterized by his relentless teasing of his family and his tendency to get involved in situations that cause amusement for others and chagrin for him.

Clair Huxtable is Cliff’s wife, an equally successful lawyer and mother to their five children (Sondra, Denise, Theo, Vanessa, and Rudy), known for her loving but no-nonsense approach to dealing with everyone.

Cliff and Clair have known one another since childhood, but their marriage stays strong due to their light-hearted and romantic relationship that never wavers no matter what they disagree on. Though their family undergoes nearly constant comedic, everyday problems, Cliff and Clair are the mainstay of the family and manage to come out of every battle even more devoted to one another and their children. Even though both have serious jobs, they find plenty of time to have fun together and bring happiness to the lives of every person they meet (unless they team up against someone, in which case there are no survivors).

Claire: When I called from the office and found out how many people were here, I decided to stop for pizza.

Cliff: Yes!

Claire: When I got home and I couldn't find you anywhere, I knew you were down here, hiding.

Cliff: Yes! But none of the children saw you come down here, did they?

Claire: Oh no!

Cliff: Well, good!

Claire: I waited till they were feeding and soon as they started, well I just grab the only pizza with black olives, anchovies, and sausage. Sneaked out the backdoor, walk around to the front of the house and came in through the entrance to your office.

Cliff: You are a genius, and I'm a genius because I married you!

Claire: Cliff, you think we should tell the kids we're down here?

Cliff: Are you drunk?
