I went on a run/walk tonight. Even with a bruised rib, you can't ignore this out of the ordinary weather (#climatechnage) and you have to enjoy it. One of my favorite things about Mass Ave is @silverinthecity's signs, whether it be their window decor or their little sign on the sidewalk. And this one really spoke to me today. "Choose hope over fear. Everyday Bravery." Most of you know that I'm a teacher. Most of you know that I am passionate to say the least about social justice and politics. Today at school we had a meeting to address an evacuation plan for one of my students. We had to address the plan in the event of an active shooter. Less than one week has passed since 17 innocent people were gunned down in their school and I'm sitting here trying to convey to a parent that their child is safe and we have a plan. In the past you would quickly pass through this part. It was a blip on the radar. It was not something we truly worried about. Today it was something I really worried about. Hell, I'm still worrying. And as I reflected on this meeting throughout the day and later scrolled my Facebook/Twitter I struggled. I struggled because I am happy that the conversation is continuing and people are mobilizing, but heartbroken that a conversation/discussion even has to be had. I fear that we will never find change because we can't make it happen. I do have hope though. Hope that pushes much of my fear aside. I will as the sign reminded me, wear my bravery as a badge and fight for my kids, fight for social justice, and fight for a future that that discussing an evacuation plan for an active shooter doesn't feel like it will ever happen instead of feeling like it could. . . . #teaching #guncontrol #commonsensegunlaws (at Silver in the City)
