Ever since Ryder and Kitty’s relationship had ended, he had been spending more and more time with Marley. First, he seemed to be in the heart broken phase, where nearly everyone was kept at a distance while he walked the halls with a gaze Marley could only describe as a pretty even combination of hurt and anger.
Thankfully, after a couple weeks - he began to slowly get back to his old self, which meant actually keeping conversation during study sessions. Since their friday study session went so well, Marley decided to muster every ounce of confidence she could to as the football player if he wanted to get some hot chocolate at Lima Bean after they were done hitting the books. Admittedly, she was a tad bit surprised when he said yes, but she tried not to let it show.
After getting their drinks and deciding to take a walk around the neighborhood, the two chatted for hours - about everything from their families to their favorite foods and movies. Before they knew it, it was night time and they were at a local park; one that was completely empty thanks to the fact that the daylight hours were long gone. Once the topic of relationships came up, they both kind of fell into awkwardness. Ryder began to open up on he thought he did wrong in the relationship with his ex and Marley went riggid. Hearing him talk down about himself, over something that didn’t actually have anything to do with him, made her feel sick.
“Ryder, can I be honest with you?” She asked, looking down at her half empty paper cup as she did so. “I know it sounds cliche, or like i’m being bias… and I know I have no place to comment on your relationship but, I don’t think there’s anything you could have done. She made her own decisions and at the end of the day it’s her loss.” She could tell her wasn’t buying it so she just continued, deciding to say everything that was on her mind.
“I mean, there’s not many people like you at McKinley. You’re social but you don’t look down on people who aren’t” she began, gesturing to herself playfully. “You’re a hard worker, you know you’re the only person I tutor who comes to every session, without fail?” She looked up at him now, just to make her point that she was being genuine and not just offering him empty words. “You’re kind of cute I guess” she teased, going slightly quiet now out of embarassement. “You’re easy to talk to…” she contiued, but cut herself off when she notice him stop and lean in
Shocked, she placed a hand softly on his chest and caused him to pause in his tracks. He looked immediately hurt and she knew she had to explain. “Ryder, you’re… you’re really vulnerable right now. I just don’t want - ” she sighed, positive she was going to sound like the biggest loser on the face of the planet. Still, she didn’t care. She had to be honest,at least about this. “I don’t want you to kiss me unless you mean it.” She explained, her blue eyes hidden behind glasses met his.
After a second, she got a confirmation that he did and her hand fell from her spot on his jacket and instead now rested on his arm as his lips met hers.
