For the mini-fic meme: 20 "Things you said that I wasn’t meant to hear," CloneShep and Rasa. :D
yyaas, thank u friendo :D
Rasa was half asleep, when a short, sharp cry cut through the night. The mattress under them shifted as Caroline jolted up, panting.“What’s wrong?” Rasa asked as she sat up, swiping hair out of her face.Without even a glance in her direction, the clone tossed the sheets aside and got off the bed. With a couple strides, she was out of the room, leaving a dumbfounded Rasa behind. She could hear the door of the bathroom open, and water rushing in the sink.Eager to find out what happened, Rasa left the bed and quietly followed after Caroline. As she got closer, she could hear her voice:“I am not Shepard, I am not Shepard, I am not…”A cold feeling settled in Rasa’s gut. This again. They fought over this so many times. The complete rejection from the clone hindered the whole plan. Now could be her chance to move this obstacle out of their path, but it could also ruin what she achieved so far. She’d find herself sleeping alone again. Not like that matters, she reminded herself. The faucet turning off and sound of footsteps urged her to act now or never. She stepped forward, into the light streaming out of the room. The clone sat on the edge of the tub, head bent, face buried in her hands.“Caroline?”At the mention of her name, she raised her gaze. But unlike before, her eyes didn’t gleam with joy. There was no pride either. Only utter defeat.Rasa’s mind worked fast. It hurt to see Caroline so vulnerable, but it also presented a perfect opportunity. She walked up to the broken figure, and wiped a drop of water - or maybe tear - from her chin.“Did you have a nightmare?” she asked softly.Caroline shuddered at recalling the dream.“I saw the ship… Normandy. Burning, falling apart. I saw it as I drifted away… I… couldn’t breathe.”“The Collector attack.”The clone nodded. This revelation confirmed her fears, and Rasa’s hopes. Thinking, searching for the perfect words, Rasa ran her fingers through Caroline’s short hair. In her memories, she returned to a place of fear, loss and pain.“It’s not easy to accept our origins” she said at last, “when we’d rather forget and pretend to be anyone else, but our true selves. But if you… embrace your past, you can build on it and become stronger than ever. You can become anyone you wish to be.”Caroline looked up on her, and for a long moment Rasa feared she saw through her pretty speech. Her heart pounded heavy in her chest, but then a smile spread through the clone’s face. She wrapped her arms around Rasa’s waist, and pressed her face to her soft belly.“Thank you.” she murmured, the words filling Rasa with warmth.Caroline slept soundly through the rest of the night, but the morning found Rasa still awake, with her own words echoing through her mind.
