I'm so frustrated because I've been working all weekend to try to get recipes together and open a bakery, mom has been snapping at me and giving me a hard time talking down to me, and then she got mad when I mentioned someone offered to help me figure out the cost/profit thing I was working on because the woman has a girlfriend and I'm a closet bisexual so I'm really upset that she would hate me.

So I talked to my mother... again

One of the things that I can’t seem to ever do is stand up to my mother.  I’ve talked about it on this blog before but just as a reminder, I’m not straight.  I’m not currently using any particular label but my sexual preferences are not limited to the opposite sex.  That being said, my mother obviously thinks that they should be.  

She tries really hard to be accepting of any sexuality or gender but it’s also very obvious that anything other than heterosexuality and cisgender makes her extremely uncomfortable.  This has played a huge part in my choice to remain in the closet.  

Tonight, we were having a normal phone conversation.  She was telling me about her week.  She spent happy hour the other day with an openly gay friend of hers.  No big deal right? While the conversation turned to the friend’s love life because she just got engaged.  It was all a lovely and heartwarming story until my mother felt the need to add “I guess you have to support your friends even if you disagree with their lifestyle.”

It’s a short little sentence but it hurts.  This is the reason I am convinced I will be stuck in the closet for the rest of my life.  Because no matter how hard she tries, my mom is never going to be alright with my sexuality.  Because I feel like I have to choose between my happiness and my relationship with my family.  Right now, the latter is much more important to me.  But it hurts so much.
