The demon venom flowing through his bloodstream made his skin hot to the touch, cheeks flushed pink whilst colour had drained from the rest of his face. He looked awful, felt it too but he would be fine. The Silent Brothers had already seen to him and had confirmed that it was nothing more than a cut from a demon’s talon that had caused the sudden fever. 

“Sophie, I will not be upset if you have to leave me for a while. I’m certain I can cope alone and you’ve no doubt got better things to be doing with your time than keeping an eye on me. Don’t feel obliged to stay.”

Jemma’s gaze didn’t raise from the notes in front of her, but her eyes stopped scanning the words instantly. Eyebrows knitted together as the words turned over in her mind. In love. A small frown pulled at the corners of her mouth as she mouth the words to herself, as if she was trying to determine how they left on her tongue. She didn’t understand how this happened. How did she become so dim to think getting ‘involved’ with her BEST FRIEND would ever lead to anything but this situation? 

Slowly, she pulled her focus away from the pages in front of her and forced herself to meet his gaze. “...In love?”
