I promise you my pain wasn’t poetic. It was days without sleep and pretending I was stable enough to continue.
i am tired of this sadness. (viatragicloss)

“then… listen to my voice. my voice is the real one, and it’s not going anywhere.”
“there’s nothing ‘round here to eat.” he drops down to the ground beside their dim, small fire, setting his unused – unused since rue and marvel, anyway – bow and quiver of arrows beside him on the leaf-covered ground. “i think the explosion scared off all the animals… found some roots though.” kress pulls said roots from his pocket. there aren’t many of them, and they’re pretty puny and won’t taste good. but kress and gayle have both eaten worse during bad times – and these times, both of them devoid of food and bloodstained and scarred-up and deep in the hunger games, certainly count as bad times.

“it’s just a thought.” there’s not really a way they can afford to move – no one in district 12 will be able to afford their house who would deign to live in the seam, and the everdeens can’t afford a home in a ‘nicer neighborhood’ because that’s out of the seam – and it’s not completely necessary. they’re safe enough in the seam, mostly surrounded by people who’ve known them forever and look after them for their father’s sake and because aster is so wonderful. “just… somewhere nicer would be… nice. for you, you know? you’d be closer to school and everything.”

rises from the dead to bring you this message:
i’m not sure if anybody UNDERSTANDS what losing aster meant for kress. like, people can TRY, but unless you’ve viewed one of your YOUNGER siblings as one of your kids ( even just halfway ) i think it’s pretty impossible to get. not only was aster ‘the only person [kress was] sure he love[d],’ but REPEATEDLY kress talks about how aster is ‘his kid.’ so throw in the whole parental aspect of their relationship, whether aster sees kress as a father figure or not, and you’ve got a whole DIFFERENT SET of painful emotions kress has to deal with regarding his little brother. kress was still a kid when he had to start basically RAISING aster, and he had to support their family and take care of his brother ( and mother, whether he liked it or not ) in a way that no kid should EVER have to do. so, YEAH, even if kress had just viewed aster as a brother and friend, aster’s death would have wrecked him. BUT..........with kress seeing aster as like HIS KID??
yeah. aster’s death changes him FOREVER. he’s never going to wake up feeling the same as he felt before he lost aster. he’s never going to stop feeling that empty ache of losing something that he loved more than ANYTHING or ANYONE else in the world. he’s never going to stop feeling HORRIBLY GUILTY that he couldn’t protect his kid. and he’s never going to stop wishing that life had been RIGHT, and that he had gone first, not aster.
