Birds twittered though the dark sky hid them from Marco’s view. Their song only meant it was around three or four in the morning. He was used to late nights and early morning sounds. To those trained to have a suspicious disposition, empty streets could be as loud as New York’s time square.
A job now complete and participants scattered, Marco took a drag from his cigarette. Sleep wasn’t happening tonight, which was why he stood smoking a cigarette outside a 24-hour diner. And besides the bags under his eyes, Marco didn’t look like he’d just come from a large drug for money exchange. He was wearing a gray suit but he left the blazer in his black Audi. Just when he flicked the ashy bud to the concrete, Marco saw just who he’d been waiting for. Once she was in ear shot, his gruff voice said, “I thought you’d be here.”
